President Bush certainly didn't score any points with his conservative base on Monday when he praised Bill Clinton to the hilt during the unveiling of the impeached president's White House portrait.
"President Bush was more laudatory and more passionate about Bill Clinton than he was about President Reagan [during Friday's memorial service]," contended nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage Monday night.
When Bush spoke about Reagan, said Savage, "we got empty homilies. We got less than empty homilies - we got a Mr. Rogers job."
But at the Clinton portrait ceremony, Savage said, "Today we actually got a passionate President Bush. He was almost animated to be around Bill Clinton. The guy looked happy."
Though the Bush-Clinton lovefest left many of the president's fans fuming, Mr. Clinton's obvious enjoyment of Bush's kind words also raised eyebrows inside Sen. John Kerry presidential campaign, which only 24-hours earlier had been assured that Clinton would come out swinging this week against the White House.
"Maybe [Bush and Clinton] have a mutual interest in a Democrat not winning this November," said MSNBC host Chris Matthews, noting that a Kerry loss would pave the way for Mrs. Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.
WRONG - President Bush didn't score any points with Michael Savage and his ILK!!!! Bush was a class act all the way. To insult or put down Clinton would have been absolutely wrong in front of all those people.
I think it was a smart move.
So true - Bush demonstrated manners and grace; something the Dims cannot do. The contrast is glaring and cannot help but set him in a better light and give people another example of why he is the right choice.

Bush is the president, and as such he is required to show some decorum. The fact that he accentuated Clinton's positives at the portrait unveiling doesn't irk me in the least.

President and Mrs. Bush are class act. Why would anyone expect them to be rude or hostile to a former president and former first lady, regardless of how odious they are personally? The Bushes hold themselves to a high standard of conduct, and for that we should grateful (remembering the conduct of the former inhabitants.)
Evidently, his conservative base never heard the old saying "kill 'em with kindness", either!!
Not to mention there is a huge portion of the electorate that thinks Clinton was unfairly targeted by the right, and also think he is the greatest president ever elected....and would vote for him again, given the chance.
Love fest? Nope. Show of class in the face of the definition of "classless" ...
Bush has always shown class. Having an Ex- president in for a portrait unveiliong is not the right venue for attacking the guy. Bush was a good host. And if it made the Dims unhappy thats a bonus.
Sad but true.
Bush's speech is the most wonderful send-up and mockery. A proper mockery for that fool of a man, Clinton. Mr. Bush even had Clinton eating his own soiled hat, and enjoying it. Absolutely amazing.
I have to admit the speech caused a near-emetic reaction for me, but deep down, I know it was shrewd stategery.

Michael Savage says outrageous things on the radio for money. I would not take one-tenth of what he says seriously.
President Bush was a class act yesterday. I have often wondered what would happen if a candidate said during the campaign that if his opponent is elected, the people would still be getting a fine public servant. I think people would react very positively to a candidate who does not feel the need to trash his opponent. The argument would be that the other fella is pretty good, but he is better.
Michael Savage can't walk through a shop full of china. George W. Bush can.
