A stand-off has taken place between members of the Muslim and Travelling Communities in Co Mayo.
A row broke out in Ballyhaunis when a member of the Travelling Community blocked the entrance to a local Mosque with his van.
Two groups of around ten men were involved in a row but no-one was hurt.
Gardaí have arrived at the scene.
Wasnt the woman who was hitting her kid on the surveillance camera a few years back a Traveller?
Yes
yes, certainly was.
At least the Travellers don't give their kids bomb belts or "honor kill" their daughters!
A friend of mine from Ireland who worked in the Police over there tells me that the "Travellers" are not a bunch to mess around with.
What is a Traveller?
they are inclined to marry them (their daughters) off to their cousins at 13 and a quater though.
Are these "Travelers" like "Pikeys"?
They are like gypsies.
they trace their roots back to people forced off their land during the famine. (mid 1800's) Now they intermarry - there are about 10 or 15 families, they deal in horses, marry young, sometimes they scam people, the women often beg, they live on the side of the road in Trailers, some of them are "settled", they refer to the rest of the Country as "the Settled Community". They have massive weddings and funerals and sometimes those events end up in huge fights. (a main reason that the Irish cops have helicopters is to watch over these events)
donno, I think Pikey is an English term, I say that Brad Pitt movie and I think that's what the Brits call Irish Travellers - in Ireland they're called "Travellers" and some other names too!!
I remember them from Dublin in the 70's. Kids lying on bridges, dirty and half asleep. All of a sudden they'd jump up and run around for awhile. Then back to their "posts". People left them change and food.
Irish gypsies.
nah, gypsies are from Europe (Southern Europe) - they're a distinct Ethnic group - Travelers are just Crazy Irish (that's kinda redundant, eh?) people.
Or as my son calls us, trailer trash.
What on earth is a mosque doing in Co. Mayo? When I was there in '76 it was 99.8% RC. I guess times have changed.
Thank you. I had no idea.
Here is a website I found..I cant vouch for the info, but it is interesting stuff...they have their own language!
