WASHINGTON (AP) -- With old political grudges left unmentioned, former President Clinton returned to the White House for the first time Monday and listened with delight as President Bush praised him for his knowledge, compassion and "the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president."
The occasion was the unveiling of the official portraits of Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Who has a grudge? Clinton? Every article mentions a grudge. I haven't seen any evidence of a grudge.

Not a very accurate portrayal of Bubba....

The occasion was the unveiling of the official portraits of Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. It was a historic occassion. This is the first time that the official portrait had been painted on black velvet.

The only thing you're missing is the political adeptness of President Bush. By publicly praising the man who preceeded him, from the opposite party, it makes it awfully difficult for others to attempt to do the same to Bush without looking like complete fools.
This was a smart move.

The President is killing the Clintons and the Democrats with personal kindness. He is showing the country he's not like them, with their boiling hate and all. Its clever, aimed at moderate swing voters. But its not primarily political - its the President behaving like a President should and that will madden the Democrats even more --- guaranteed.

My thoughts exactly. The Democrats are the ones who constituency hates Bush, who can't think of a positive word to say about the man and now he's left them all floored by being kind to THEIR hero, Bill Clinton. A tribute to his predecessor was the one thing the folks on the other side did NOT expect. They thought he would do to Clinton what they've been doing to Bush for years now. The American people are watching this and its an impressive contrast between Bush's decency and the Democrats and by extension, the Clintons' own boorishness.

well, klinton is about to embark on "the book tour heard
'round the world"; maybe GWB wants to send him off with
warm and fuzzy feelings for his successor.
I read someplace that 42 takes it pretty easy on 43. of
course, we won't know for sure until this thing comes out.
I wonder if it will read like one of his never-ending
speeches?

People will be reminded of Bush's words on Clinton's in comparison with Kerry's words on fellow vets and Kerry's words on Bush when he fell while bike riding.

I listened to this and it was anything but praise. who ever wrote this speech is a master. It was as generic as a speech can get. he could have been talking about the President of the rotary club. Great wording. It walked up to the line but never crossed it.
