Were both landing sites determined to be wet at some time?

The primary reasons both sites were chosen were 1) It was guessed they were likely to have been wet and 2) they were flat and safe to land on 3) Near the equator to get maximum solar power

Harold Edgerton was a Martian.

There are cat turds there also, but you can't see them because they are buried.

Eh, actually the JPL scientists informally call them "blueberries."

Lots of pix from Spirit and Opportunity here. David Grinspoon checks in on the John Batchelor talk show and talks about these adventures. He has a lot of links - for anyone interested.

I had a wild stretch some years back and decided that farming on my acre and a half was a good idea. Goats and chickens are about the only feasable option on that small of a plot.

Needless to say that I found that one billy and 6 nannies can be quite entertaining.....for about 5 minutes. After that it turns into an endless and horrifying porno flick because the billy doesnt need a costar.

Are they wild or domestic? That's the big question.

Some of those pellets appear to have made 'roll tracks' in the dust. Could we be looking at a life form of perhaps a bacterium that has gone gargantua? Or a life form that produces its nutrients from sunlight and dust, requiring very little water because it uses water as a catalyst instead of a universal solvent?

They're mineral accretions that formed within the rock, most likely by water (similar to the "blueberries" found by Opportunity).

The rock gets eroded away and then they're exposed.....the primary means of erosion is high winds. What your seeing is likely each blueberry sort of protecting the rock behind it somewhat from the wind, creating what appears to be a track.

"And overall the striking thing is finding something so similar to what Opportunity found on the complete OPPOSITE side of the planet."

Yes, it's the same kind of dirt, no doubt about it. Is there dirt and Dandelions in China?

Well, actually what's more interesting is the layering on the rock on the left.

Perhaps, but inquiring minds really want to know - just where is the Cap'n?

This picture was definitely taken on my friend's land. 20 acres of rock, scrub oak, dirt, weeds, and an enormous quantity of chiggers, ticks, fleas, bees, and snakes.

My buddy raises prize goats and sheep. The berries are everywhere.

If you look closer you'll see his unofficial walkway made of the bountiful sandstone in the area.

Now, if you spot oil, that's his old Suburu's doing.

IMO, picture looks overexposed. Where'd you say you got it? And what exactly did you say was filming on his land?

Okay, we've got Martian blueberries and orange cauliflower. What shall we have for the main course?
