(06-14) 11:54 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --
President Bush offered a glowing tribute to former President Clinton on Monday as the White House unveiled the official portraits of the 42nd president and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Bush rode into office on a promise "to restore honor and dignity" to the White House after eight years of Clinton, and he was bitter at Clinton for defeating his father in the 1992 presidential contest. Moreover, Clinton plans to campaign for the man trying to oust Bush from office, Democrat John Kerry.
But on Monday, Bush delivered a lengthy, forceful defense of his predecessor, and welcomed dozens of Clinton administration officials back into the White House. It was Clinton's first return to the White House since leaving office, said a spokeswoman, Tammy Sun.
"As a candidate for any office, whether it be the state attorney general or the president, Bill Clinton showed incredible energy and great personal appeal," Bush said. "As chief executive, he showed a deep and far-ranging knowledge of public policy, a great compassion for people in need and the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president."
Bush left Clinton laughing so hard that his face turned red with a jibe about Clinton's optimism in campaigning in Texas for George McGovern in 1972.

This is high end politics...NOT school yard tit for tat. This is the way grownups act in public.
Sit this election out,if you choose to,but if Kerry wins and we lose one or both Houses,it'll be YOUR fault.
GWB, no doubt, had not been looking forward to this event. Then, as the hand of fate always deals the cards, President Reagan died. Our President got a good chance to think, "What would Ronald Reagan do?", and this is how he chose to answer that question. Rather than give raw meat to his enemies, who would have howled wildly if Slick had been snubbed in the slightest, he kept this story buried on page 47.
Let's also consider the fact that the artist was a black man, and any snub to Slick would have been perceived as a snub to blacks. Also, just as with "Islam is a religion of peace," it is our President's job to lie to our enemies.
Right now, Bubba and GWB have the very same goal, keep Kerry from getting the Presidency. He's the real loser in this story.
From the article:
Speaking of Sen. Clinton, Bush said, "She inspires respect and loyalty from those who know her, and it was a good day in both their lives when they met at the library at Yale Law School."
Translation: Innocent people were spared from heartbreak when this marriage was made in hell.
I'd say, your brain is not engaged.
You are absolutely correct. President Bush spent all that time, using all those adjectives and adverbs to describe Bill and Hillary's....PERSONALITIES. Not one mention of any accomplishments (over eight years), because there WEREN'T ANY!
Masterful damnation by faint praise by the cagy Texan.
Semper Fi,
What is that supposed to mean?
You posted it twice,BTW,so you came across as being serious. Not being a mind reader,I and others took your post to mean what it said. And my brain works very well;unlike some others who post here. ;^)
I recall Reagan being gracious to his political adversaries. Maybe you are thinking of a different Reagan.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
Don't forget the judges. It isn't just about the next four years, the house and the senate. The Supremes are getting OLD. 4 are over 70, 2 over 80.
Look, I agree with you, all of us hate Clinton to the nth degree. But if Bush would have done so, he makes himself look petty and small and the liberal news media would have highlighted it endlessly. Better to grit the teeth and play the high road.
Bush knows that Clinton's legacy is a rusty sink and a ditzy intern. No need for Bush, or conservatives, to get their blood pressure up needlessly.
"He is a man upon whom history will be the true and finial judge."
Why in hell would he honor it, Bill Clinton disgraced it so much I doubt if George Washington came back it could be so honored. This upset me to no end. First W. brought A hole Kennedy to the White House and now this tord. Im sick I tell you., sick.
This is a HUGE election and one with far reaching ramifications for decades to come. Those who prefer to think and act childishly, need to be continuously hit over the head,to wake them up.
That's the girl that just got new boobs from this thread

Get over it,for crying out loud! This is high level politics, not some kids engaging in a turf war.Grownups are supposed to be civil;which the president was.For him to have behaved the way some of you wished he had, would have been the disgrace!
Okay! So GW Bush did stretch the truth just a little in this one instance. But Close contact with Clinton has that effect on everyone.
That isn't Paula Jones behind Bill is it? There is a strong resemblence.
Today it was all about the Clintons, and sonovagun if they don't all look wide awake for a change.
You're sick?
Well, go throw up and then try to grow up.
This is the way adults behave. Learn.
LOL.....how about his comment to Mrs. Rodham......and those two boys she's still trying to raise.
President Bush did NOT praise anything about either Klinton. Try to listen!
