WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush offered a glowing tribute to former President Clinton on Monday as the White House unveiled the official portraits of the 42nd president and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Bush rode into office on a promise ``to restore honor and dignity'' to the White House after eight years of Clinton, and he was bitter at Clinton for defeating his father in the 1992 presidential contest. But on Monday, Bush delivered a lengthy, forceful defense of his predecessor, and welcomed dozens of Clinton administration officials back into the White House.

Who was that person, and what has he done with George W. Bush.
Bush didn't offer any ringing endorsement or defense of Clinton! He was courteous and respectful of the office of President without saying that Clinton himself is a great person or that his policies were all good. He said general, noncommittal things that any respectful person might say about any president at such an occasion. He was also kind and friendly to the family, showing class and a willingness to be decent to those who are not always decent to others.
It is what you do when you honor someone. You say things like this even if you do not mean them. It is a sign of class and a good up bringing.
Now of course the Dims use such things against Republicans if say a Trent Lott says things he did not mean about a retiring Strom Thurman. But you can not let the jerks run you out of being classy.

No good deed goes unpunished. The Dems will use some of this speech in soundbites during the campaign. Trying to treat Dems with class and dignity is a losing proposition.
Obviously, you missed the point!
I loved the speech. Plus, he really had no choice but to host this event. Snubbing the Clintons is NOT the way to be a class act.
``As chief executive, he showed a deep and far- ranging knowledge of public policy, a great compassion for people in need, and the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president.''
Bush left Clinton laughing so hard that his face turned red....
Was 42x able to stay awake?
This is a news article.
You've linked a (then) live thread about the event.
So would you prefer that Bush stoop to the level of someone like Clinton who refused to show respect to the elder Bush during the campaign because he disagreed with him? One of the things we heard over and over about Reagan last week, from friend and political foe alike, is that he was kind and respectful to those he disagreed with--he didn't let them have their way, he was willing to speak against their ideas, but he was never hateful or personally discourteous.
B I N G O!! You are exactly correct!!
And .. when Rush was playing a few clips, I noticed one very important thing. President Bush NEVER gave one MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT of Clintons. It was just nicey, nice.
Like you said, it was just respect for the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT, and "general, noncommittal things that any respectful person might say".
Our President is a class act! It would never occur to him to be rude, spiteful, demeaning or to embarrass anyone.
This quality of our President was what Ronald Reagan lived by .. and I believe it's one of the reaons America loved him so.
This is all fine and dandy, but I was disappointed that President Bush did not mention that he had the special place to hang both those portraits, a little room off the Oval Office.
Already posted 3 or 4 times. It is the current President's job to do this when it occurs. I'm sure Bubba timed it out to coincide with the release of his book, "My Lies".
What kind of potrait is that anyway? (The Clinton one) All he`s doing is just staring ahead without smiling or anything. Just standing there like a zombie!
Sure, it was all about HIM!
