Documentarian kept quiet after filming U.S. soldiers abusing Iraqis
- Ruthe Stein, Chronicle Senior Movie Writer Sunday, June 13, 2004
Filmmaker Michael Moore said Friday he wasn't sure he did the right thing by saving footage of U.S. American soldiers' cruelty toward Iraqis for his controversial documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11,'' instead of releasing the evidence earlier when it might have helped halt such abuse.
"I had it months before the story broke on '60 Minutes,' and I really struggled with what to do with it,'' Moore said in a telephone interview with The Chronicle. "I wanted to come out with it sooner, but I thought I'd be accused of just putting this out for publicity for my movie. That prevented me from making maybe the right decision.''
The footage, eerily similar to film of the atrocities at Abu Ghraib prison, shows GIs laughing as they snap photos of each other putting hoods over Iraqi detainees.

Why didn't he do something to try to stop the abuses of the Iraqis that the liberals all feel so sorry for?
Too busy making a blockbuster movie which will link the currently sitting president to osama bin laden using a mixture of fairy tale and liberal spin just before the presidential election.
But it's strictly for entertainment purposes! It's not really a political ad.
Moore is full of it!
Hey, look at this! Seems MM had info before the Army!!
Lets investigate, get the camera man who filmed this to testify. If the camera man is still alive that is.
Many think the cameraman was Nicholas Berg
DITTO
He's full of something. And there is several 100 pounds of it.
When is SOMEBODY going to investigate this? Seems to me this wouldn't be too hard. Moore is on record saying that he had film FEDEXED to him. He laughed how easy it was. Can't we check WHO SENT THE FEDEXES?????
I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT!
And I STILL believe he provided the camera and paid the 'photographer'...just wish it could be proven.
Thanks for the heads-up. (Here we go again.) I posted one last comment on the thread, but I doubt if anyone saw it...
It's a beauty! How's he going to handle this?

Will you spread the word?
What is the fixation about the hoods already? Big deal! I don't even have a problem with law enforcement puttin bags over the heads of east LA gangsters.
There's gotta' be some sort of death penalty for messing with the troops in a warzone.
Well, I don't know about that, but what I don't understand is how this has fell onto the wayside.
sorry, lost the Moore/NAMBLA link, googling for it now. It seems he is doing a documentary re: ACLU defense and such idealogues as O'Reilly and Hannity are fighting it.
I'll bet if they pressed this "innocent little pfc" there would be plenty of info
Start from the top down. You know 'it's being investigated' - 'it's in the chain of command' - 'I haven't read it yet'.
Don't screw the troops.
I'm still think Moore's footage was staged. Why would any commander in his right mind let Moore into the prison to film something so incriminating?
If it is genuine, then he is complicit in the abuses that took place, and should be prosecuted right along with the servicemen and women who participated.
Is it possible that it was Michael Moore himself who posed as the mysterious intelligence operative who gave all the strange orders at Abu Ghraib?
I find it interesting that the news of this is coming out on a weekend...rather Clintonian in the dodging of news.
If this is out in the media, however, it means that there is more dirt on Moore about to come out. Otherwise, the story would be ignored.
I am keeping my fingers crossed.
