GOP activists mapping out California election strategy (Firestone weekend)

Firestone Weekend's message:'Win one for the Gipper'

"Let there be no mistake -- California is in play for President Bush," thundered Mario Rodriguez, the party's vice chairman, to loud applause.

In an overview of competitive legislative seats, Republican analyst Allan Hoffenblum described how many more districts were in play than previously expected -- largely because of excitement about Schwarzenegger.

Ed Rollins, the Jones campaign's senior strategist who managed President Reagan's 1984 re-election campaign, said that with its vast financial resources, the Bush campaign would be "fools" not to make an effort in California, even if the prospects for victory were slim.

"The way you win is to go out and compete," Rollins said.

"You owe it to this country to have a second term with the maximum vote of the people."

From another article:

Republicans discuss strategy at Firestone ranch

With wind in their sails from Schwarzenegger's successful campaign and rising popularity, Republicans are energized to fight for seats in competitive legislative districts.

"We are in one of the best positions we've been in for years," said Sam Blakeslee, Republican candidate for the 33rd Assembly District. "People can see that Schwarzenegger means business when he talks about stimulating the economy and bringing back jobs."

===

Most Republicans know that Schwarzenegger has been good for California and for the Republican party. His election reenergized the party and will help elect more Republicans -- maybe even help Bush carry CA, wouldn't that be something?

The first thing the CA GOP should do then is to dump the inept Bill Jones and find someone else to run against Boxer, since they wanna be in a fighting mood and all.

The rank and file should have gone with Howard Kaloogian. But in all fairness, I don't think any Republican could have unseated Babs Boxer. The seat's hers til the day she retires or dies.

IT's too late to dump Jones -- it's too bad that no fire-breathing Republican ran in the primary.

The only thing to do is support Jones, and hope some of Arnold's star power will rub off on him to defeat Boxer, who should never have gotten elected in the first place.

How sweet it would be to see...what...52 electoral votes go to G.W.B. in November...

Dream on. There are more Democrats here than Republicans. Until a Reagan-like figure comes along, a Republican like President Bush doesn't have a snow's chance in hell of winning California. I mean Kerry is as lousy a candidate as the Democrats can nominate and yet he still has California locked up. Arnold aside, its still pretty much a one party Blue State here.

Never say never...

I know one poll is a slim hope, but you really never know.

I wouldn't write off CA yet -- after all, CA did elect a Republican governor, just a few months ago.

True but Arnold is NOT a Texas Republican which is who Bush is. Californians don't want to be Texans; they'd rather be Democrats before they are Republicans and they'd rather be a Blue over being a Red State.

Its really too bad that there was NO candidate during the primary that looked good against Boxer. Boxer, who's approval rating is under 50%, we don't have a candidate that could take her on.

Hopefully, Bill Jones could still pull it off with Arnold on his side. But I am not going to hold my breath on that.

Let's face, demography is a political fact of life and there aren't enough Republicans here to give Bush a fighting chance. Come to think of it, the President has been to California maybe three or four times in the last four years. He's made dozens of trips to Pennslyvania and Florida. Why waste your campaign's resources on a state you can't win?

For What it's worth Matier & Ross have a blurb in today's SF Chronicle on "A statewide poll of 900 registered voters taken June 4-5"

Arnold 73% positive
Feinstein 59%
Boxer 49%
Kerry 45%
Bush 40%

I'd be happy if they could force Kerry to spend resources in California and then elect a few conservative Republicans to House seats. Beating Boxer would be a real plus, but I don't think it will happen.

One More Tribute (to President Reagan)
Bill

"How sweet it would be to see...what...52 electoral votes go to G.W.B. in November..."

You are missing the point. BTW, it's 55 electoral votes. If they go to Bush, unexpectedly, that's a 110 vote swing! Kerry cannot survive that. No Democrat can win the presidency without NY and Ca. Those votes have already been counted. Take any of them away and GWB is in.

Also, he doesn't have to win. Just putting Ca. in play and forcing Kerry to spend time and money there can be devastating to his overall campaign.

I was thinking that...it would be nice to see Commie Kerry lay a lot of money into California, wouldn't it?? :)

Wasn't it reported that John F'n "biker" Kerry has run ads in Marin County a few weeks ago...?
