Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh announced Friday that he and his wife, Marta, are divorcing.
The Limbaughs "mutually decided to end their marriage of 10 years" and have "separated pending an amicable resolution," according to a statement released by Limbaugh's publicist.
The couple shared a $24 million oceanfront mansion in nearby Palm Beach, from where Limbaugh often broadcast his daily three-hour show.
Spokesman Tony Knight said the matter was personal and declined further comment.
It was the third marriage for both Limbaugh, 53, and his 44-year-old wife, who were wed May 27, 1994, at the Virginia home of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Thomas officiated the ceremony.
The past several months have been difficult for the politically and socially conservative Limbaugh, who announced in October that he was entering drug rehabilitation because he was addicted to prescription painkillers.
At the same time, West Palm Beach prosecutors announced they were investigating whether Limbaugh illegally went "doctor shopping" to obtain the pills. The practice refers to visiting several doctors to receive duplicate prescriptions of controlled narcotics.
Limbaugh, who has not been charged with any crime, has repeatedly fought back against the charges and negative publicity he's received over the matter.
Last month, he took out full-page ads in two Florida newspapers to attack prosecutors for mounting what he called a politically motivated investigation. He also regularly lashes out against prosecutors and reporters and defends himself during his show.
The criminal case against Limbaugh is on hold pending a decision from a Florida appeals court. It will decide whether the seizure of Limbaugh's medical records, which were taken by investigators in November, violated privacy laws.
Prosecutors say they need the records to determine whether to bring charges against Limbaugh.
Rush not intelligent? Have you ever listened to his show?
As far as education goes, I have nothing more than a high school diploma and I am a conservative.
Many people I see have degrees and are liberals.
If an opinion from the unwashed counts.........
There've been a lot of people like that; truly amazing but amazingly true.
Yea and we know how often they get their "facts" right.
Maybe she just doesn't like cigars
Rush's wife married a wealthy man. She stayed for the obligatory ($$$$$) ten years. She won her lottery.
I have to say the same thing about men. It would have to be someone very very special for me to try again. One divorce about killed me. I'd rather be alone than be dragged through that sort of hell a second time. Fortunately I like my own company and have two excellent cats besides.. I hope Rush keeps the cats. At least when they give you s**t all you need to do is scoop it up. There is much less emotional and psychological damaged than from a spouse.
All it takes is to miss a couple of days coming on Free Republic; and I've missed several timely articles that are already old news to the always here posters.
No reason to be tacky about it.
I would not talk about mine on national radio either.
Marry me.
I believe that you have assumed a great deal in this statement.
One does not need to attend school to become "educated." Once a person learns to read and listen, he/she is totally capable of educating him/herself.
Further, you have no idea whether or not Rush--or anyone else--has studied science or the humanities. In fact, none of us knows what any one of the others of us has studied.
In my opinion, it is an elitist attitude which causes people to make claims about the individual educations of others.
I remember a very long time ago, way before Rush met Marta, he said on the air he did not make a good husband because he was too selfish. This may still be the case. It may be that he excels in his career but in marriage he is just star crossed. Who knows or cares? It is his private grief and one he will have to work out alone. I agree with those who do not see this as a moral issue. If it is, it is between he and God.
I think William F. Buckley did an analysis of the 2000 election based on educational achievement. He discovered the group most likely to vote for Gore where those that did not finish HS. The group second most likely to vote for Gore were those with master's degrees. His thesis was that if you go all the way through and get a master's degree, it's like not even finishing high school at all.
He found the groups most likely to vote for Bush were people with a high school diploma and some college.
All in all, it's just another brick in the wall.
OK. Just let me grab my industrial strength poop scoop and I'll be on my way! :)
then Rush is not wise, not intelligent, but he's real smart. If you use other definitions, he can be anything you want him to be. Rush is not intelligent enough to know, for example, that Germany declared war on the US during WWII before the US went to war with the Nazis, but he was smart enough to say it to millions in a way that nobody but me noticed. He scorns education. He boasts about fighting with teachers and vandalizing schools.
But don't get me wrong, intelligence is highly over rated. I'm not all that intelligent, but I've done all right because of sheer force of will. I'll hire a slow person with determination over a lazy intelligent one any day of the week.
So how am I supposed to eat??!!??!?
Just pointing out that assumptions get us no where. WE DON'T KNOW! We have zero information and assuming Rush or Marta "are to blame" is ridiculous.
We have all seen divorces, not a single one has just one person to blame. There are with absolute certainty divorces that do not involve infidelity, druge/alchohol abuse, or any other tabloid reason.
I have seen enough bizare stuff in the courtrooms to know enough not to assume knowledge. (though the case of the marriage with the slave contract was truly beyond bizare)
What do we know:
Rush and Marta are living apart. Marta moved out of the house. They are still legally married as florida does not recognize separation.
We don't know if it is drug abuse related.
We don't know if it is infidelity related FROM EITHER PARTY.
We don't know if it is pain related to his back and neck.
We don't know if it is ear related to his deafness.
We don't know if it is related to her prior two marriages.
We don't know if it is related to his prior two marriages.
Since FL is a no fault state AND and equitable distribution state. The standard language in 100% of divorce petitions is the boilerplate "irreconcilable differences". The only evidence required under FL law is the petitioning party raise their right hand and swear under oath the marriage is irretrivably broken.
Interesting note, FL law also provides for the putting of a divorce case on hold for three months for the parties to seek marriage counseling. Both parties must consent (or the judge find there is the possibility of saving the marriage), but that provision being excercised in a FL courtroom is as rare as a white rhino.
Gotchya.
