Two Border Agents Based in Texas Found Dead Southwest of Tucson, Ariz. The Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Two off-duty border agents based in Texas were found dead Friday southwest of Tucson. The male and female agents, who both worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in El Paso, Texas, were found by a Tohono O'odham Nation police officer who was responding to a report of an abandoned vehicle, the tribe said.

It's not known what the two agents were doing in Arizona, said Doug Mosier, a spokesman for the Border Patrol in El Paso.

The male agent worked for the Border Patrol for 15 years, his female colleague for more than two years, Mosier said.

The FBI helped the tribe gather evidence at the scene but otherwise was not involved in the investigation, said FBI spokeswoman Susan Herskovits.

A Border Patrol spokesman said the families of the agents had been notified, but he declined to immediately identify them or give other details.

Test them for Drugs, if they show Negative test the people that they work with, It is IN House... sad but

Don't test them for consumption of drugs, test them for residue, clothing etc, all clothing, equipment, vehicles etc of fellow officers at the time of their deaths should also be tested, it may be too late.

"a Tohono O'odham Nation "

An Irish-Native-American tribe? The plot thickens.

Hmm...very strange. Sounds like something out of a movie...or at least some cheap made-for-TV deal.

Sounds like murder, suicide.

Too early to tell, but the investigators should be able to figure it out.

It's a relatively large Indian reservation near Tucson that many illegal use to cross. There's an INS force called the Shadow Wolves all of whom are from that tribe.

Lets add this up. They are based and live out of west Texas and were off-duty. Tucson is a good 6-hour drive from El Paso and not the place you would run off to for a weekend love affair if you were living in El Paso. To make matters further complicated...they were found on the Indian reservation...just miles from the Mexico border, by the Indian reservation cops. Just an abandoned vehicle search. They weren't out there for love or sex. This was about money or drugs. My guess is that they had a 3rd person (probably a local border guy in Tucson) who was supposed to be part of some deal going down. The deal went sour, and these two were whacked. But it would sure make a good movie...maybe Jennifer Lopez and Ben Afflick as the two...and "the Rock" as the other border agent? And maybe Don Johnson as the Mexican drug dealer?

From the AP: The agents, who worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in El Paso, were found by a Tohono O'odham Nation police officer who was responding to a report of an abandoned vehicle, the tribe said in a news release.

Doug Mosier, a spokesman for the Border Patrol in El Paso, said the agents were identified as Arturo Betancourt, 45, and Elizabeth Granillo, 31.

Betancourt had worked for the Border Patrol for 15 years and Granillo for 2 1/2 years, Mosier said.

"The case is being investigated as a murder-suicide," said Mosier, who declined to elaborate. It was not immediately clear what the two agents were doing in Arizona, he said.

The FBI helped the tribe gather evidence but otherwise was not involved in the investigation.

Seems pretty weird that the FBI is backing off of this. I think they get dibs when a crime has interstate involvement, Indian Reservation consideration aside.

Sounds like some mexicans probably picked up two bounties on Border Patrol agents.
