LIVE THREAD--Reagan State Funeral Ceremony: Lying in State at the Rotunda (6/11/04)
Yes, you sign an oath not to undermine the US gov when you are hired. He fired their butts when they refused to go back to work when he ordered them to. My friend did go back, and was not fired. She is still an ATC and makes lots of money. Ronald Reagan played hardball because they were undermining the safety, and well being of everyone involved with the Airlines. Their union Patco blew it big time, and they did not care. They screwed over a lot of people, and changed peoples lives forever in a negative way.
He was out here, and made his appearance at the ceremonies at the library in Simi Valley With his own photographer.
RE: John Kerry. My understanding was he was always scheduled to be at today's service. Some who sought to mitigate his horning in on the line in California offered the theory that he did it because he wouldn't be in D.C., despite some of us pointing out he was slated to attend and sure enough, there he was today.
I was looking up his info & found this:
Ronan was born forty years ago with lower limb disability. When he was twenty, his legs had to be amputated below the knee after an auto accident caused complications. Just weeks after the operation, he was climbing up the steps of his college dorm. Within a year, he was winning gold medals in the disabled games. Between 1981 and 1984, Ronan amassed eighteen gold medals and fourteen world records.
It was this kind of determination that soon propelled him to conquer a whole new field. He became the first disabled person ever admitted to the National College of Physical Education, and then a full-fledged Medical Doctor, specializing in Orthopedic Sports Injuries, with a degree from prestigious Trinity College.
Encouraged to study voice by his father, Ronan won both the John McCormick Cup for Tenor Voice and the BBC talent show Go For It less than one year after beginning to study music. The following year, Ronan won the prestigious International Operatic Singing Competition in Maumarde, France. His debut Sony album became a top five hit in two weeks, going platinum shortly thereafter. Ronan has just completed his autobiography to be published in February of 2001. Ronans second solo CD; will also be distributed worldwide in February 2001.
Ronan says "I want people to realize that regardless of what infirmity or disability, it should never stop you from doing what you want to do. You can mentally make your mind strong enough to overcome any obstacle that comes your way. Make a deal with yourself to take risks, because when you do and it come out right, boy its some buzz!."
Remember when Barbara Bush had to sit next to him and complained that even though her son was President she had a bad seat? I had the same feeling when looking at Lynn Cheney. Clintons were probably mad the Cheney's sat between them and the Bush's.
She wrote a book, "America No More," decrying multiculturalism and bilingual education, which is offered as a selection by the Conservative Book Club. And she also had all sorts of bad things to say about Clinton. Here's an example, written right after Clinton's impeachment trial:
Already, for instance, the talk shows are filled with questioning about Gov. George W. Bush of Texas, the front-runner for the Republicans. He fully admits that he had a drinking problem more than a decade ago. Yet many pundits are wondering if this will disqualify him, even though there is not the slightest comparison between his old problem, now ovecome, and the eternal abuse of women by the president.
This is why, if we were smart, we would return to our earlier principles regarding personal behavior. Had we observed these, we would have seen clearly, from the very beginning, that Bill Clinton's life is not just an occasional mistake, but an entire system of character flaws so great that one problem, one revelation, one more hidden horror will inevitably be followed by another.
But I now think, after doing a google search, that I understand exactly what kind of "conservative" she is, and why she hates Bush so much, even though she defended him in the 1999 column I quoted. Not only has she written at least one article in Pat Buchanan's magazine, The American Conservative, but she also published a vicious anti-Israel falsehood in one of her columns. Here's what David Frum had to say about it:
Consumers of punditry often encounter Georgie Ann Geyers obsessive antipathy to Israel in their morning papers. Her antipathy is so strongly felt that it overcomes any journalistic scruples she might have. In a May 10, 2002, column, for example, she reported that Ariel Sharon had recently told the Israeli cabinet, I control America. The quote was a hoax that had originated in an October 2001 press release from a pro-Hamas association, the Islamic Association for Palestine. It had then been widely circulated on anti-semitic websites. Geyer reproduced this astonishing statement from an obviously suspect source without making any personal effort to check or verify it.
I burst out laughing when Bush #41 read that about the turkeys! That was perfect!
Probably didn't happen because there was a risk of taking out the current President.
I was amazed at the people who had the guts to show up at the event. Especially Algore and some of the other RATS who aren't there out of love or respect for Pres. Reagan.
I understand they are invited because of protocol and all but still...
if you have a scanner...
128.375 125.72 133.55 for AF1
and
271.00 for the F16s
and
121.500 for the planes that need to get escorted out of the area
Yesterday I heard a CBS radio reporter say Reagan was the only President born in Illinois.
Abraham Lincoln was born in Illinois.
Sigh...
I saw that about the Saudi prince -- isn't he the one that met with Clinton in Houston that time? I don't trust him at all.
I just learned that he is Commander, Military District of Washington. He commands all of the troops stationed in Washington, D.C. I don't know whether it is his duty as Cdr, MDW to escort the President's widow...but it certainly seems proper to me.
Is it a good idea to post that out in the open?
I saw something wonderful when I was driving through the FSU campus this morning. There's a low concrete wall next to the curb, and the sororities and fraternities are allowed to paint messages on the wall. One of the fraternities had written this - all in red and blue on white:
Remember our president, our hero, our brother
Ronald Reagan 1911 - 2004
My daughter thinks she saw TKE at the bottom. Do you know anything about President Reagan's college years?
What's always been very interesting to me is that when you hear the media talk about these fired PATCO workers, they conveniently leave out what happened to the union leaders who encouraged the strike. Is that lying by omission? LOL
Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky.
A friend just called me on the phone to discuss the days' events. But a question came up that I couldn't answer. Did anyone see Gerhardt Schroeder today? I know that it was announced that he would attend, I just didn't see him.
"...sure enough, there he was today."
Any bets on whether-or-not the pics taken of Kerry in California will end up in his campaign stuff?
He is very stupid -- back on messenger since it looks my computer is finally back to normal.
Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky.
