SALINAS, Calif. -- Authorities in Salinas, along with a bomb squad from Santa Cruz, are investigating a suspicious package found on Byron Drive in the overnight hours.

The street is behind the Nob Hill store on South Main street.

The bomb squad has blown up the package and a white powder apparently surfaced as a result.

A hazardous materials team remains at the scene taking samples in an effort to determine what the substance is.

A nearby apartment complex has been evacuated and the area remains closed to traffic.
