Gorby is not going to die as a bitter old man. He lost the contest and he is making the most of it. He wants a lot of people at his own funeral.
From his perspective Ronald Reagan was the best thing that ever happened to him ~ an American President who would speak out on behalf of "reform" ~ the kind he had in mind, or another type ~ it really didn't matter.
Although Gorbachev is probably not going to go down in history as the greatest benefactor the Russian people and the Captive Nations ever had, he will be recalled as the man who facilitated Ronald Reagan in his campaign to end the Cold War and bring democracy to the East.
I would challenge your premise. He didn't "lose the contest." He won, with Ronald Reagan's help. So did all the victims of the Soviet System. I don't care what NPR says, WE won the cold war. That "we" includes all the free people of the Earth as opposed to the forces of evil in the world.
Good observation!
Some of the liberals are trying to spin it that Reagan was the one who came around, rejected conservatives and worked and trusted Gorby who then won the Cold War. They give Gorby more credit than Reagan. Weird.
Gorby is trying to revisionist history Reagan from the great communicator to "the man who listened to gorbachev".
IOW he obeyed the socialists and let gorbachev take down the belin wall. How much do you want to be that the left will try and say reagan KNEW the wall was comming down and was just hogging glory.
I have no doubt that many of those present or paying respects have not respect or love for reagan. They are there only because they HAVE to be, the price of not doing it is too high. Besides they get to bask in Reagan's glory.
