Tuesday, April 20, 2004 Focus on 9-11 may be helping militias regroup

By Howard Witt Chicago Tribune

SUE OGROCKI / AP On the ninth anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, people visit the field of chairs at the Oklahoma City National Memorial, a tribute to the 168 victims of the bombing

AUSTIN, Texas — When FBI agents searched a rented storage locker in a small east Texas town last year, they found a huge cache of weapons and the ingredients to make a cyanide bomb capable of killing thousands of people.

Just as startling was the identity of the owner of the arsenal, which included nearly a half-million rounds of ammunition and more than 60 pipe bombs. He was not some foreign terrorist with ties to al-Qaida but a 63-year-old Texan with an affinity for anti-government militias and white-supremacist views.

William Krar, an itinerant gun dealer, quickly pleaded guilty to possession of the chemical weapon and then promptly clammed up, leaving federal officials to wonder what he had intended to do with his deadly arsenal and whether his conspiracy extended beyond two accomplices who pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Experts who track domestic terrorist groups would like to know as well. The 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, which occurred nine years ago yesterday, led to a period of disarray and decline for militias, and anti-government right-wing extremists remain a largely hidden threat of unknown proportions.

This article is a load of crap. There is no tie at all offered that connects a focus on 9-11 to any purported rise in right-wing extremist groups. And compare the isolated right-wing incidents mentioned in the article to the myriad terror attacks and violence in this country from enviro-whackos, animal-rights nutbars and anti-globalization anarchists. Absolutely NO comparision in scale.

But, hey, this is Reagan's week, so they gotta do SOMETHING to defile conservatives.

Someone needs to write a publication with a rock solid operational definition of what constitutes a so called "militia" versus a group who is made up of conspiracy obsessed individuals who have read Mein Kampf, the Chronicles of the Elders of Zion, as well as OBL's fatwas, and who may actually be getting manipulated by false front reps of foreign intelligence agencies. Then, send the idiotic "Project Megiddo" to the shredder and fire all the Clinton holdovers not only in the FBI but throughout the DOJ.

I'm surprised the FR gun-grabber crew hasn't shown up on this thread yet.

Very true. If anything, 9/11 focused attention on all forms of terrorism...domestic as well. The press really misses Clinton.

I'm still not convinced the OKC bombing was the work of any sort of US-based "militia". I believe there are enough dots to connect between Iraq and McVeigh to suggest this was an Iraqi operation - McVeigh was the frontman. The picture of "John Doe #2" strongly resembles that of the individaul (Padilla) who was recruited by al Qaeda to craft and detonate a radiological weapon on US soil. Putting 2 and 2 together we come to the conclusion that Iraq and al Qaeda were involved, which is not ruled out yet.

Funny... Tim McVeigh didn't HAVE any ties to the militia movement. That was all a big whoop-dee-do caused by the liberal media, Bill Clinton and that little paranoid, lunatic-fringe psychopath Senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter. Oh, yeah, a friend of his went to a militia meeting once.

But the funny thing is, McVeigh did what he did to oppose US policy in the middle east. Sorta puts him closer to Al Qaeda and Hussein than the militias. (The "racist, sexist, homophobic, fascist" Michigan Militia had a black, gay, socialist woman as its president at the time.)

So militias are on their way back? Well, I don't know anyone in one, but I can't think that's a problem. The article equates them with domestic terrorism. I would like to hear one domestic terrorist act ever perpetrated by a militia. Seems they've been more often the VICTIMS of Clinton-sponsored domestic terrorism.

Absolutely correct, and there's much more to McVeigh than it seems we'll ever know. Another thing, when there's a big hit by Muslim "extremists", there's a sudden surge of white-supremists hit pieces on TV, notice that?

The Hitler Channel chose to run back-to-back stuff on the Mafia and other over-used subjects during Memorial Day weekend (until Monday at least). Try writing them a complaint via email, you'll find that they have a very strictly controlled email system; one has to stay in certain categories with pull-down menus and you are limited to those categories--unless someone has found the way to get around them.
