Steyn the film critic looks at a part of Reagan that seems to have gotten missed in all the tributes this week - his film career.

"King's Row" is a classic. It was supposed to be a Bob Cummings movie, but Reagan stole it right out from under him.

Phrases like bit player and B-movie get bandied about a lot by the Reagan disparagersThat's kind of how Liberals think of Conservatives in general: second-stringers. Good enough (maybe) to be the disloyal opposition, but never, ever, ever first-rate anything.
That was what they really hated about Reagan: He didn't know his place.
(Thank God)

There are going to be some fireworks at next year's Oscars when they do the roll call of the dead. If they don't mention Reagan, they will get a ton of heat, deservedly so. If they do mention Reagan, the usual Hollywood idiots will complain and moan.
My prediction: they'll realize they'll have to mention him, and may even have to do a special tribute. The blood pressure of Baldwin and Streisand will go up.

There he is. Brass Bancroft!

Ronald Reagan never got the "really great" parts that was every actor's dream. It doesn't really matter. He was a much better politician than he was an actor and its not on account of his Hollywood period that endeared him to the American people and their memory.

I recall hearing a rumor in the late 80's (after he left office) that Reagan was asked to play the role of Sylvester Stallone's father in one of the Rambo flicks, but turned it down. Don't know if that story was true or not.
To: NovemberCharlie
If I understand correctly the lefts dismissal of Ronald Reagan, its that he was a third-rate B-movie ham of no consequence and simultaneously such an accomplished actor he was able to fool the American people into believing he was a real President rather than a mere cue-card reader for the military-industrial complex.
Just like today, when President Bush is alternately described as a dummy and a Machiavellian genius, within the same sentence!

And so Mr Norm in the flickers became an extraordinary figure off-camera, bringing down the curtain on Communism: from Bedtime For Bonzo to bedtime for Bolsheviks. Cant beat that.
Gotta love Steyn!
