Has it been mentioned here that the flag covering the casket tonight is the one that flew over the U.S. Capitol on the occasion of President Reagan's first inaugural?

As for Senator Stevens' placing the wreath and his salute, he made reference in his remarks to his service in WWII. He must have been an officer, thus he's earned the right to salute that young soldier.

You are correct if he was on officer. But, the soldier did not salute in return, maybe wasn't sure what to do?

Thank you for that information. I had wondered when I saw the "flaw" in the field when it had flown over the Capitol--I thought the day of his death.

I felt the salute Stevens gave was to President Reagan. There is no reason for him to salute anyone else.

I love tidbits of info like this! Thanks so much. Earlier, when they played "Hail To The Chief" at the Capitol building, I wondered how many Presidents (maybe as they are leaving office)think about it playing for them again at their funeral.

It is, at once, a creepy-shivery thought but also somehow profound.
