Got back to Charlottesville an hour ago and I'm going to bed soon...................

Left Charlottesville @ 12:30 PM......110 miles to DC. Got there at 2:30 and got a parking spot at a underground garage at a Holiday Inn across from the Air & Space Museum by 3 PM.

Went over to the WWII Memorial for a bit and then met the congregated Freepers @ the corner of 15th Street. When the casket passed by I wept. Nancy waved from her limo at us.

I followed the procession down the street behind the crowds. At 4th Street the F15 Fighters went over. I started to weep again. The final jet peeled away and climbed into the muggy, moist haze, higher and higher until you could hear the engine roaring but no longer see it. I REALLY wept at this point staring into that blue sky as the jet disappeared.

Got into line at 6PM. By ~7 they had completed getting the casket inside. Listened to the proceedings on the radio I had as the line started to slowly snake from West of the Reflecting Pool.......2 layers of security checks and much waiting........Got inside at ~10 PM.

Knelt in the Rotunda and gave Thanks to this man for all he did for us as the line slowly snaked around the casket.......no hurry.

Out into the muggy Washington night, down the steps of the Capitol with the Mall and the glittering lights of Washington spread before me all the way to the Lincoln Memorial. Got in the car by 10:30.......110 miles to Charlottesville.

Back at 12:30 AM. 12 hours.

Mr. Sandmans tugging at my eyelids and I've got work tomorrow. Night all.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I must say, Cheney's remarks were splendid, and beautifully delivered. He was just the right touch, and said just the right things, in the right way, after a rather awful performance, and then an average one, but the two who preceded him.

I think it was Peter Jennings whose father told him to be quiet during moments like these with the words "let them hear the hoofbeats".

During the procession Peter asked Barbara Walters to continue her commentary. She did not. Peter then asked Sam Donaldson to weigh in. Sam was silent. Then Peter shut up.

This is totally not in keeping with the comment I made, nor the spirit in which it was made.

Agree with your sentiments. Stevens looked like he was reading off some RNC talking points: souless delivery, and overly partisan. Hastert was okay.

Cheney shined, because he focused on the man, not just the President. W. would do well to focus us the "warm and fuzzy" stuff about Reagan's life, and not try and draw veiled parallels between Reagan and himself...

Has it been mentioned here that the flag covering the casket tonight is the one that flew over the U.S. Capitol on the occasion of President Reagan's first inaugural?

I love tidbits of info like this! Thanks so much. Earlier, when they played "Hail To The Chief" at the Capitol building, I wondered how many Presidents (maybe as they are leaving office)think about it playing for them again at their funeral.

It is, at once, a creepy-shivery thought but also somehow profound.

Bubba is the only ex-POTUS who is late (about 12 years late) turning his funeral plan in. He'll need to do a town meeting and a few polls to help him decide what to do. What if he turns in the plan, then thinks of more cool stuff to do later? This funeral planning is HARD.

If simply awful is the word that you would use to characterize the Rev. Daniel Coughlin's spewage, then you are letting that idiot off way too easy.

When did Thatcher approach the casket? I'm watching the replay on C-SPAN and everyone's filing out, but I never saw her.

I wonder what goes through the minds of the honor guards as they stand perfectly still throughout all of this.
