Baroness Thatcher is leaving London for Washington to attend the funeral service for President Ronald Reagan, who died on Saturday aged 93.
The former Prime Minister recorded a seven-minute tribute last February to the man she has described as "one of my closest political and dearest personal friends". This tribute will be played during the service.
Afterwards, Lady Thatcher will fly in Air Force One to California for the burial.
A close friend of Lady Thatcher's said that she was at the opera at Glyndebourne on Saturday when she first heard the news of President Reagan's death.
Wife and I got to hear Lady Thatcher give a speech in Minneapolis in 1992 or 93. She really gave a great talk.

I am so glad that the former PM is going to make it. She's had a series of small strokes and isn't in good health--I'd heard that her doctors told her not to make the flight. Maggie's pluck, determination, and refusal to let others tell her that she can't do something is shining through once again!
Wow. I'm jealous. That was back in my dumb under 30 liberal time. I wouldn't have cared one way or the other then.

I suspect that is true. Though I think the Brits have a great deal of respect for her. I was on vacation in London 3 years ago. It was cheaper to buy a pass for the double decker tourist tour bus to get around than to take a cab or the underground. Riding around one day the tour guide on the bus was clearly not a fan of America through comments he was making. Lady Thatcher's apartment was a block from my hotel and as we approached the guide pointed to her window and with great pride and clear respect for The Iron Lady told us who lived there and that when she passes one of those plaques will be on that building.
For those that have never been to London, if a famous person ever lived somewhere in London, when they die a plaque is placed next to the window of the apartment they lived in saying who lived there, when, and what they did.

I didn't know that, thanks for the information. I had heard that she wouldn't be speaking at President Reagan's funeral due to her strokes, but that she had recorded a message to play for the eulogy. God bless her! What an admirable woman!

Sir Denis passed away a year ago this month. Although I never had the honor to meet Lady Thatcher, I met her husband several times and he was such a kind and unassuming man. He used to travel all over the world without any security whatsoever and seldom drew any attention. I used to get a kick out of that. Nobody ever seemed to recognize him.
Great pictures. Wonderful to see two dear friends enjoying each other's company. The sad thing is we need their indomitable spirit, as these are indeed perilous times. I'd wish that the RATS were a party of conscience and integrity, that they'd nominate a man who, if he won, wouldn't ruin the country. But this is impossible. We have only one party worth voting for, one candidate worthy of wearing RR's boots. And he's already the President of the United States.
Isn't she Baroness Thatcher, or am I wrong? And what's the difference? I hope the trip isn't too much for her and that the National Cathedral is air-conditioned since it's going to be in the 90s on Friday. We can't afford to lose any more of these giants.
All of us grow up at various rates of maturity. I didn't see the light until the mid 70s.
MadIvan, it's so good to see you back on FR. I'm delighted the Baroness is strong enough to come for the services. This particular American welcomes her with open arms and a heart filled with gratitude.
