TIKRIT, Iraq, June 7, 2004 First Infantry Division and Task Force Danger soldiers were presented with combat patches, officially known as the shoulder sleeve insignia indicating former wartime service, during ceremonies throughout North Central Iraq on June 6, 2004, according to 1st Infantry Division officials.

The patch ceremonies held added importance as they were held on the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, where thousands of 1st Infantry Division soldiers gave their lives.

“This is a great day to reflect on the sacrifices of so many and connect the past to the present,” said Maj. Gen. John R.S. Batiste, 1st Infantry Division Commander. “You are now joining the ranks of your fathers and grandfathers who have worn this patch in the past. You are all veterans tested under fire.”

The awarding of combat patches to soldiers is a tradition that dates back to World War II.

No, disrespect intended, and the above is an actual 1st Infantry Division combat patch - though why, I was Freeping too fast to see.

Off to be more careful lest I be mistaken for a mainstream reporter....*g*
