I'll stand up for CasearianDaoist, I have been pretty negative lately about Bush's approval ratings.
This one hits even harder though for me.
Red wrote: Ingenious really, if this hits Bush's desk, he loses. If he signs it, he angers a large part of his base that will not show up to vote for him in November. If he vetos, the press rips him for lying and he risks loosing some of the "swing" voters.
I agree with you 100%. In an ideal world, we would have a truly conservative leader [side: I think Bush is a fine person; but I find some of his policies to be moderate, at best] who would veto the bill and present clear reasons for doing so. For example, I will veto this bill because it has been proven to have zero effect on criminals or crime and it is a step towards government disarmament of its citizens; and the right to bear arms is a crucial and indispensible aspect of a free society. [or something to the effect]
In honor of Reagan, I remember when he explained how a tax cut would stimulate the economy. He took a conservative stance and educated the swing votes, thus converting the swing votes into Reagan votes.
I wonder if our guys, you know, the Republicans who are fighting the culture war for us in the government, have ever invoked Rule XIV to get a bill through. If not, WhyTF not? Why is it that our side plays nice (in spite of commie media propaganda to the contrary)?
Sunset the AWB. Then sunset Feinstein's political career.
The woman is a menace to every citizen's constitutional rights.
Because we have milquetoasts like Bill Frist leading the bunch. The Republican "majority" in Congress is nothing but a laughingstock and a pawn of the Democrats at every turn.
Additionally, if it gets into the House, it's going to be even *more* unpopular with House members who will then be the last stop before it hits Bush's desk - and if you think the Congresscritters are getting indigestion over it, just imagine what Bush is thinking. There is NO WAY he wants this to reach his desk. He arguably owes his election to NRA and Charleton Heston, who staged massive rallies in key states which Bush won, and the loss of any of which would have cost him the election - and he's got *no* guarantee that things are going to be any better for him this time, and if he signs that bill, it won't even *matter* if NRA still tries to get him elected - no gun owner will listen to them.
Actually, I'm optimistic about it. Remember, the house VOTED TO REPEAL this bill after the Demonrats got thrown out in the 1994 elections. I never thought I'd live to see *that* much out of them.
However... If we get one "coincidental" mass killing between now and September, all bets are off... and if that bill *does* reach Bush's desk, it just *might* get Kerry elected and/or transfer the Senate back to the Demonrats - and rest assured, they'll do *ANYTHING* they can to produce either of those scenarios (or anything else they could think of, to get back into power) - A_N_Y_T_H_I_N_G...
We need to make sure that *all* of them are living on antacids for the next three months - the Senate, the House, Bush, ALL of them. Calling them all this week and telling them that Fiendswine needs to be put back in her place, is a good start.
I call it the "ban weapons assault."
DANGER: Sarah Brady was on MSNBC and said Reagan would have supported the AWB because he signed the Brady Bill. She was in full swing of talking points of the DNC.
Be VERY aware.
The other point which will affect the AWB is to try and creat a faux bipartisan demand by invoking reagans getting allong with all. IOW give in to AWB because Reagan would have caved. I don't remember RWR caving on his principles.
"If we get one "coincidental" mass killing between now and September, all bets are off"
Do you really think they'd set this kind of thing up for the AWB? I know they are ghouls, but that really seems unlikely to me.
