Reagan: The Conservatives' Jackie Robinson (brief vanity)
self | 7 June 2004 | Finalapproach29er

Young people need to know the pressure Reagan faced in 1981-82.

Like Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in baseball in the late 1940's, the Conservative pioneer Reagan faced the same powerful hate and insults. He was called every name in the book, including an "amiable dunce" and the favorite cuss word of the left: "racist".

Like Jackie Robinson (a Republican, by the way), he was the right man for the time & task. He needed to be strong enough to withstand the baiting, and withering hurricane of hatred.

Carter's 1980-81 budget drove the US into further recession. Employment was over 10%. The pressure to cave on interest rates and tax cuts was enormous. Same for the pressure to make a "compromise deal" to freeze the arms race. The marches in the streets of Washington applied tremendous pressure. Reagan refused. Like Jackie Robinson, Ron was a rock.

He saw the flag laying on the ground, gave up a comfortable retirement, picked it up, and raised it high to the sky. Thanks Mr. President!

Hope this vanity is okay. I had to make the comparison.

I just want to make sure I'm clear here. When you say Jackie Robinson was a Republican, do you mean Jackie Robinson or Jack E. Robinson? I just want to make sure I'm clear.

"Employment was over 10%."

I can't argue with that stat. Unemployment was also over 10%, as were interest rates.

I should also credit Carter with one sigificant fact; his performance on the job, while I was in high school, led me to Reagan, and I believe others of my age would say the same thing.

No one helped Reagan more than Carter.

I remember those days. Undergrad in college; ROTC was spat on by faculty and students alike; Leftist intellectual snobbery in every classroom.

And the President was always there. Leading by example.

In four short years, it was once again, a thing of honor to wear my uniform. You could fly the flag; you could pray; you could feel optimism in the very air.

There's a lot of that again, these days, but the damage by William the Impeached and half of America will take another Reagan to repair. I'm thinking.

I also remember the attitude towards those who wore the uniform. You got it.

What's funny is that Carter thought that, after doing nothing to fix things, he was going to get re-elected!LMAO
