Los Angeles, CA (June 5, 2004) Screen Actors Guild (SAG) President Melissa Gilbert issued the following statement on the death of former President Ronald Reagan, who served as president of SAG from 1947 to 1952 and again from 1959 to 1960:
"Ronald Reagan presided over Screen Actors Guild at one of the most challenging moments in our union's history, as the rise of television significantly impacted the compensation and working conditions for the nation's screen actors. Under his tenure, SAG grew significantly in size and influence as the Guild tackled issues ranging from runaway production, to fair compensation, to unity in an increasingly complex industry all issues that remain timely to working actors today.
"It can be said that Ronald Reagan got his start in politics at Screen Actors Guild. He served as president of the union twice, from 1947 to 1952 and again from 1959 to 1960. While President Reagan's politics grew conservative over the years and, at times, at odds with the nation's labor movement, there can be no question that he devoted years of his life to advancing the wages, benefits and working conditions of his fellow actors. He leaves behind an enduring legacy to this industry, as he does to the country as a whole. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today."
That's correct and his pals are dead.
Jimmy Stewart was a close friend and
a fellow Republican.
Merv Griffin is alive, but I can't recall
any of his other close show business pals
who are still living.
Melissa Gilbert wasn't alive when RWR
was SAG president, and by her statement
it is obvious.
Speaking of Jimmy Stewart, he was also a great man. He's my personal favorite actor of all time. He was the first of the A-list Hollywood actors to enlist after Pearl Harbor and retired from the reserves a brigadier general, the highest military rank ever achieved by a Hollywood figure. He never let his military achievements be used in his Hollywood publicity material.
Interesting...

Bingo!!!
I think you're hypersensitive.
I dont really see anything barfy about this concidering the source.
Glad she had something nice to say about Reagan and there is no shame in growing or moving towards conservatism.
I have no doubt she'll contribute to Kerry, if she hasn't already.
"Nice cleavage shot."
At least somebody has their priorities straight. (All pun intended.)
I have many of these listed on my Profile Page.
Not bingo. At least not in my case. Just go read my typical FR responses on various thread. I call it like I see it. If others don't see it the same way, so be it. I'm also willing to acknowledge that others may be right in their counter opinions if I respect the dissenting FReeper, that is.
Her official website lists her politics as "Democrat"
and a liberal Democrat?
And you know this as fact how?
Only liberals use the word "while."
why the barf alert?
The date for the press release (on the link you posted) says "June 5, 2004." The website itself notes the current date. But even if they did just release it today, forcryinoutloud, it's the first business day since he passed.
As conservatives, we have a lot of battles to fight.
This isn't one of them.
And she worked on the congressional campaign of a Republican. Neither proves she's a liberal. And even if she was, what about her statement are you trying so hard to be offended by? You're obessed with this in an unhealthy way.
What a pathetic statement. What should we expect from a group of people who make their living pretending to be people they are not.
Gilbert was interviewed a few months ago by Joe Scarborough, in that full week show he did. Anyone else remember that?
Gilbert IS a liberal Democrat, her husband Bruce Boxleitner is a Republican.
HOWEVER, she is not a ranting, off the wall liberal. She actually -acknowledges- that Hollywood and the media is liberal - which is a hell of a lot more than most of the kool aid drinkers are willing to do. She doesn't despise or dehumanize Republicans either, as many in her line of work are willing to do. She seems to be a liberal in the more classical sense of the word. Which, of course, means that she no longer has a political party :)
That probably explains all the confusion, and why so many think she's a Republican. She's that rarest of rares, a respectable liberal. I'm sure some of her positions still drive Bruce up the wall though ;) I'm guessing they don't discuss politics much, heheh.
