Gore says Miami Mayor Penelas betrayed Democrats

Former Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore delivered a harsh message to Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, three months before he faces a U.S. Senate primary.

BY BETH REINHARD

breinhard@herald.com

Former Vice President Al Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election by 537 votes in Florida, on Saturday called Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas ``the single most treacherous and dishonest person I dealt with during the campaign anywhere in America.''

The statement was e-mailed by a Gore spokesman in response to a Herald inquiry about Penelas's role in the 2000 campaign. Gore supporters say the vice president had counted on Penelas for a late boost in the Hispanic community, and the mayor did not come through.

The harsh remarks come just three months before Penelas faces a Democratic primary election for the U.S. Senate. Gore's reproach could seriously damage the mayor's bid to succeed Sen. Bob Graham, since party loyalists tend to dominate turnout in a primary.

In a telephone interview Saturday evening, Penelas defended himself, saying he was ``by Gore's side from the very beginning.''

''Al Gore has a right to be upset about the election, but had he won his home state of Tennessee or West Virginia, we wouldn't be here,'' Penelas said. ``He also owes an explanation as to why he waited until the middle of October to engage in Florida.''

He said Gore has declined to return his phone calls to discuss the 2000 campaign.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Cuba is akin to the old East Germany mothers and fathers would DIE to get their children across the Berlin wall. These are not mexicans looking for a job these are people living in tyrany.

Obviously you have never had to deal with family or loved ones who are trapped behind an iron curtain or you would not be so flipant.

Clinton attempted by executive fiat to alter what is a guiding principle of assylum to those who have fled communisms iron boot. Clinton also was afraid of another mariel which Castro publicly said he would do if the boy was not turned over. Reno, Clinton, and Pinelas were all complicit in facilitating a tyrany. It is also telling that contrary to procedure, the clinton administration ordered the then INS service files shreaded.

This was not a simple custody case, the mother had actual custody. The father only became an issue when Castro ordered it.

Your quaint effort to compare fleeing communism to mexicans crossing deserts in order to illegally participate in the ecconomy are laughable. Mexico is not a communist country.

It should also be noted that at the time of elian he DID ENTER LEGALLY as an asylum seeker. The law provided for such entry for Cuban nationals. The Clinton administration failed to uphold the law in order to prevent another mariel boat lift and was in fear of his political legacy.

Clinton, Reno and by complicity Pinelas turned a thankgiving miracle into a Castro propaganda victory.

Yet another example of why a democrat like kerry does not belong int the white house. Peggy Noonan wrote Ronald Reagan would have simply said "the boy stays."

Nothing specific but Miami insiders told of how she and her gal pals would go out and get drunk over and over again, she was a terrible state attorney and a complete political hack for the Clintons. The line is Clinton wanted her since she was in the closet and he could always hold that over her for complete control of basically her every action. Not that the clintoooons are control freaks or anything like that.

The stories of her incompetence in the State Attorney office are legend. She only got her job because HITLARY selected her and she was seen as a "team player" (aka does what she is told to do and will not cause problems for Bill Clintons anticipated scandals)

If you are looking for a perfect world you might want to try Cuba.

Another common opinion on Freerepublic is that liberals are ruled by emotion whereas conservatives base their opinions on logic. It would seem with this Elian Gonzalez thing that those roles are reversed. Your post illustrates this nicely.

Since he was born under Castro's rule, and they both are still alive, that would at least make him a "lifelong pawn" up to this point in time.....

OK ??

I'm seriously starting to think that if Bush gets re-elected, Gore will be ready for the rubber room.

Excellent analysis. It's kind of crazy to hold a five year old guilty for the actions of others who control him. His mother died so he could be free with relatives in Miami. Was everything she did legal, possibly, possibly not, the jury will always be out on that, once Castro came into the picture they truly were political refugee's, before who knows, but five year olds should have rights once they reach the U.S. not matter how. The right not to be used as a political pawn by Bubba and his buddy Castro.

I always suspected her closet case is why the Clintons appointed her as their puppet.

Clinton did just TWO very good things in his Presidency. 1) Bomb Kosovo

Kosovo sure worked out well!
Well, if you like an ethnically-cleansed, Muslim, narco-terrorist state, that is. Or if you like white sexual slaves from all over Eastern Europe, servicing U.N. troops, whom, according to Amnesty International, take up to a 20% cut of the brothel activity.

Yea, Kosovo is a foreign policy dream come true.

I'd tend to say that most Americans were operating under an American conception of parental rights, not a Cuban one. On other threads on FR father's rights are considered sacrosanct. Why not in this situation?

You mean a "Communist" conception, don't you?

My family is Cuban for generations and the traditional Cuban concept is that you don't give up a child to a parent who asks for him when he has a gun pointed at his head and is told to ask for the child.

This father's rights to say what he wanted without coercion were massively abused by the Cuban Communist Government and the Clinton Administration.

Because the father was kept under de facto house arrest during the entire time he was in the U.S., the father was under the full control of Communist Cuban agents, thanks to the Clinton Administration.

Republican Congressmen asked to meet with the father, his wife and their younger son, alone, and they were refused by the Cuban Government and the Clinton Administration. The father's second wife and younger son were always kept as hostages, under the full control of Communist Cuban agents, so that the father would say what he was supposed to say.

This hostage practice is routinely used by Communist China. The Chinese Communists will allow one family member to travel abroad but keep other family members in China to ensure “Politically Correct” behavior abroad by the other family member. Or else.

When the “Elian Grandmothers” were making their U.S. propaganda tour, closely guarded by Cuban agents, Reuters reported that their husbands were being paraded in back Havana in propaganda rallies.

Read the accounts of the negotiations prior to the SWAT team raid to seize Elian at gunpoint at great risk to Elian and all other persons in that house.

Who had veto power over any deal as negotiations were conducted that night with high profile third parties that included that the President of the University of Miami?

It was Castro's legal representative and Bill Clinton’s impeachment lawyer, Greg Craig.

What was the final proposal on the table that Lazaro Gonzalez approved? That the father, Juan Miguel, Elian and the Miami family would all move a NEUTRAL site with Juan Miguel FREE of Communist Cuban agent oversight.

Did Janet Reno approve of this plan? Yes.

Did Greg Craig and his de facto client, Fidel Castro, veto it? Yes.

Who is in control here? Fidel Castro and Greg Craig, Bill Clinton’s impeachment lawyer.

What is the common theme here? That Juan Miguel Gonzalez must always be kept under Castro/Clinton house arrest with his family held hostage by Cuban agents even while on U.S. soil and with his wife’s family held hostage back in Cuba.

If, after your death, the father of your child asked for custody while he was being held hostage, would you want your child sent to him?

Or would you at least first demand that the father be freed from his hostage situation so that we may judge what he truly wants when not under coercion?

Freedom from coercion is a "father's right", is it not?

Nice try Karyn but there is a hell of a lot more meat to the Elian saga than "emotional conservative responses." Just read my earlier posts.

Dear Karyn M.
I sincerely encourage you to quickly engage in an autonomous act of extreme physical intimacy that some might consider physiologically impossible.

Thanks

The Elian ordeal was, by far, the most divisive issue on Free Republic.

I agree with you that the correct action was taken by Clinton/Reno given the most unfortunate of circumstances.

Gore has really gone off the rails. He's down at the bottom of a deep, deep well of bitterness.

Better there than at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. I guess.

Penelas was a local rising star when I was living there 10 years ago.

Why is he running as a Dem....?

district demographics?

It's a tightrope walk to get the conservative Cuban vote and please the Jews, Blacks, and now I hear many Brasilians there.

Who was the mayor before him who lived in the Grove and had a home invasion robbery at his house?

Brilliant post Polybius, one of the better analysis of the entire Elian sage I have ever seen, you really put it into perspective. Maybe even the good doctor will understand.

He is a ward of the state, is not in the home of his father who now has little interaction with the son with whom he was never truly re-united.

Do you know this for a provable fact? Last I heard, Elian and his father shared a home.
