For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
June 5, 2004
Remarks by the President Upon the Death of President Ronald Reagan
Ambassador's Residence
Paris, France
12:41 A.M. (Local)
THE PRESIDENT: This is a sad hour in the life of America. A great American life has come to an end. I have just spoken to Nancy Reagan. On behalf of our whole nation, Laura and I offered her and the Reagan family our prayers and our condolences.
Ronald Regan won America's respect with his greatness, and won its love with his goodness. He had the confidence that comes with conviction, the strength that comes with character, the grace that comes with humility, and the humor that comes with wisdom. He leaves behind a nation he restored and a world he helped save.
During the years of President Reagan, America laid to rest an era of division and self-doubt. And because of his leadership, the world laid to rest an era of fear and tyranny. Now, in laying our leader to rest, we say thank you.
He always told us that for America, the best was yet to come. We comfort ourselves in the knowledge that this is true for him, too. His work is done, and now a shining city awaits him. May God bless Ronald Reagan.
END 12:43 A.M. (Local)
When Reagan was hosting Death Valley Days his background talk for each show was the best thing on TV. It still would be if it were today.
My thinking was in the time of night that he found out and had to decide whether to wait until tomorrow as he originally was going to do, or to pull it together in order to speak while it was still June 5th in the US.
No matter which choice he made there would be some moron to mock it...Snow, for one.
Classless fools.
I am wondering what, if anything sKerry has to say. He is probably debating whether to be for or against Ronny's death.
Me too. Until this moment I was hanging on -- but now waterworks (and I am in a Hotel foyer).
"The haters are taking over the country"
NO THEY'RE NOT!!
I'll prove it to you. Rush gave these stats some time back and I have never forgotten them. During the American Revolution, there were 3 groups of people. 33% wanted to break away from England; 33% didn't; and the last 33% didn't really give a rip one way or the other.
Today that same 3 groups still exists. So - the angry people are probably LESS THAN 33%. Does that help ..??
I'm glad at least a few other FReepers caught Snow's remark and had the same reaction I did.
me too........
"I caught the Fox News panel discussion immediately after the audio of GWB's remarks were first released. Tony Snow sniffed that the remarks weren't personal. I'll forever hold that whiny complaint against Snow. What did he expect? GWB is the current President of the United States. As such, he must strike a formal tone in public because he isn't speaking for himself, personally, but for the entire nation. Sheesh!"
I agree. I love Tony Snow and his quiet intelligence a gentle finesse of conservative facts/positions/truth. But Tony should realize that, as you said, the President was speaking for the nation. If the President had made this a spersonal statement in any way then we would hear the same (and correct in that instance) criticism that we gave after the Wellstone Pep Rally. To highlight Reagan is to highlight the righteousness of the Conservative view.
God Bless Ronald Reagan.
Snow will wish he had that remark back, but cut him some slack. He's one of the better conservative commentators, and probably said it more out of respect for Reagan than disrespect for Bush. (unless I'm missing some background info, which is always possible)
I sure did and I was thinking about sending Snow an email.I might still do that.
Sort of :-)
We have been blessed with two GREAT Presidents. Ronald Reagon and GWB. I was summary kicked out of mt then wifes family for having a argument with my then father in law and his neighbor in 1980 over voting for president Reagan, and how if he waselected we would have a war. I told both of them they werem full of S**T!
Hopefully, sKerry won't figure this out until November 3, 2004.
Probably so. I got the impression Tony expected something more than a formal presidential statement. He didn't appear to stop and think that the very fact GWB arranged to give a personal statement in the middle of the night French time was remarkable in and of itself. Earlier, reporters had been saying there would just be a written statement released. GWB obviously countermanded his staff's recommendation to wait until morning to give a live statement.
BTTT!
Me too.
Whiny complaint is exactly the correct term.
I hope he wishes he could take back that remark.
Dear Tony:
", W.
I join you in tears...
