Thank you
God rest his soul, and prayers to his family. We are all the richer for having had Ronald Reagan showing us the way.
Red
I was driving back from lunch Sat. afternoon, after 1:30PM, and heard the announcement on KLOS radio. Felt like the breath had just been torn out of me.
Not exactly tragic, not exactly surprising, but still sad when the long goodbye ended. "It finally happned", I thought.
Couldn't believe some of what I saw on TV later that day, one of the anchors on the Fox 11 station in L.A. asked Bruce Herschensohn, who was on the phone with them, "Reagan really was a loveable airhead, wasn't he?" (or words very similar). Couldn't believe it.
And I tuned into CNN just in time to hear Paula Zahn ask someone (Lou Cannon I think) say something like Reagan and Bush I really didn't like each other and only joined on the ticket as a political move.
Infuriating!
Later that night, 1AM-ish, we drove up to Hollywood and laid some flowers with a card on the Ronald Reagan star on Hollywood Blvd. Johnny Grant had already placed the official arrangament, plus there were some candles, a 40's era photo of Reagan in cowboy garb from a film, more flowers, a few handwritten, moving letters.
A father figure, my leader, gone.
Thank you, Mr. Reagan.
Copied from a Post The Dutchman- a great Illinoisan
According to family legend, his father ran up the stairs and looked at his newborn son, he quipped: "For a fat little Dutchman, he sure makes of a hell of a lot of noise, doesn't he?" To which his mother Nelle replied "Yes Jack, but who knows, he might grow up to be president some day." During Nelle's pregnancy, his parents had decided to call him Donald. But after one of her sisters beat her to it and named her son Donald, their son became Ronald. The young child never thought "Ronald" was rugged enough for a young red-blooded American boy and as soon he was able to speak, asked people to call him "Dutch." That was a nickname that grew out of Jack calling Ronald "the Dutchman" whenever he referred to the infant.

PRESIDENT REAGAN, AMERICA AND ME: A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE
President Ronald Reagan embodied the reasons why I emigrated to the United States from England and eventually became a naturalized American citizen.
In 1976 while still living in England I placed my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and became a conservative born again Christian. In 1978, looking for a country whose people affirmed the values which I had begun to hold dear, I emigrated to the United States with $50.00 in my pocket and a one way ticket.
I was immediately thrilled with what I found and how people received me. However, it wasn't until President Reagan was elected to office that I realized my adopted homeland now had a president who embodied my core values.
Here is part of what President Reagan said on March 19 1981 as part of the National Day of Prayer Proclamation. With my background, I am sure you can understand how I related to these sentiments.
He said, "The earliest settlers of this land came in search of religious freedom. Landing on a desolate shoreline, they established a spiritual foundation that has served us ever since. It was the hard work of our people, the freedom they enjoyed and their faith in God that built this country and made it the envy of the world."
It was the Reaganesque approach to life which helped hone my then unrefined conservatism and helped me found and formulate the faith-based approach of Joy Junction, New Mexico's largest emergency homeless shelter. I believe President Reagan would be proud that Joy Junction and many other similar ministries nationwide rest on the core principles of faith in God and hard work to help the homeless get back on their feet again and become a part of mainstream community life.
BECOMING AN AMERICAN
Now although I greatly enjoyed the first 20 years I spent here in America, something was missing. During that time, I was still a British citizen, yet living my life as a resident alien in what I consider to be the greatest country in the world.
There was no reason for me not to become an American citizen. My heart and my family lie in America. And until I became an American citizen, I couldn't fulfil one of my greatest dreams: to vote; get more actively involved with conservative American politics and make a difference.
Finally in late 1998 after studying up on American history for the required test (and passing), I took the oath of American citizenship and cast my first vote a few months later. I am so proud to now be able to talk about America as being "MY country." God willing, I will never miss an election in which I am eligible to vote. I count it as a wonderful privilege.
Unlike some, I have nothing bad at all to say about America and the wonderful God-given foundations on which it was built. I appreciate it to the very core of my being and will always be proud to be a part of this wonderful country. Spending some time in the Middle East quite recently has made me even more appreciative of the United States. To be sure it has some problems, but they can be minimized and solved by the values that President Reagan stood for.
THOUGHTS FROM CYBERSPACE
Sadly, not everybody feels like myself or President Reagan about America. A 2003 recent survey by the BBC asked participants what they thought about America.
Some of the comments (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/wtwta/2997248.stm ) were astonishing. Here is a selection.
James in India wrote, "I have been to the US and it is beautiful but the people are self-centered, highly opinionated, morally limited and with Christian righteous, pro-Jewish values. It is scary how the country can become a dangerous weapon under a president with such a limited and narrow bandwidth."
Igor from the United States counter-commented (sic), "I always knew the BBC was very anti-American and anti-Israeli. I sent several postings to address this. G-d bless America and Israel."
Rahul from the United Kingdom wrote, "America seems to have no political left as a counter-balance. It has center right (Democrats) and neo-Conservative (Republican). This combined with Christian Conservatism means that opposing views can be listened to but never taken into account when making important decisions. Too many people in power think too similarly to the others in power. e.g. only one person voted against the war in Afghanistan in the Senate."
Steve, also from the United Kingdom, wrote "The USA's only real contributions to the rest of the world are McDonalds and war. I can very well do without both."
Gonzalo Arriaga from Finland had an interesting comment, "What behavior can you expect of a country who sought independence because it didn't wanted to pay taxes?" (He conveniently forgot the religious persecution).
However, I loved the comments from Shah in the United States. (sic) "America (is the) greatest county in the world. Took me in when I was cast-off by my own country as an undesirable. Now on my way to becoming a millionaire. Love the country, people, culture, energy, and most of all the HOPE. Thank you America for giving me an opportunity at life. God Bless You Always."
I echo Shah's sentiments and thank God for the wonderful country of America in general and in particular at this time of national mourning the transforming presidency of Ronald Reagan.

MICHAELMBATES.COM: "WHAT MADE REAGAN REMARKABLE" -Commentary by Michael M. Bates (June 10, 2004)
I am proud and fortunate to have lived during your time and your Presidency, Mr. Reagan. You will always be thought of as "Uncle Ronnie" to me, the guy who made the hostage crisis go away, and the guy who quipped, "My Fellow Americans, I am pleased to report that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We start bombing in five minutes."
You were a President with a heart and a sense of humor.
And a backbone of stainless steel.
You will always be my boyhood hero, Uncle Ronnie.
Rest in Peace. You did well. I miss you.
DG
America The world was lucky to have you while we did, Ronnie.
And Ronnie is still missed by many of us.
Thanks for reminding us of the passing of this true American legend a year ago today. We ought to start the movement to remember his birthday, February 6th, as well. It's the least we can do for a true leader who brought down Communism without a war.
I was here about a week when this happened. I am so thankful to have found this place to come and mourn Ronnies passing. I don't know what I would have done without all of you.
Happy (belated) 1st FR Anniversary. :)Fat Teddy recalled and commented on the 1st anniversary of the Abu-GhraibA$$ story breaking.
Whatcha wanna bet he doesn't mention this anniversary?
Thanks for the ping.
Rest in peace, Ronald Reagan.
Anniversary ping.
