Resending to add pronouncer for Belzec New memorial opens to commemorate holocaust victims
(Warsaw, Poland-AP) -- A new Holocaust victims' memorial will open today at the first Nazi concentration camp to operate gas chambers.
The death camp at Belzec (BEH'-oh-zhets) in Poland is the final resting place of a half-million Jews. After years of neglect, the old memorial set up there has fallen into squalor. It was set up during the nation's communist era, and Jews believe it never gave the victims adequate recognition.
The new memorial is sponsored by the American Jewish Committee and the Polish Government to commemorate the hundreds of thousands of Jews put to death in Poland's six death camps.
Belzec only operated from March to December of 1942.
