the first thing is to throw everything the femocrats taught you out the window... The second thing you should do is go and buy a copy of The Rules.

At the risk of claiming to have understood this author's intent, let me suggest that not many readers seem to have done so. It will always be true that there are immediate actions one can take to improve one's lot, but what I think she's decrying here is that the environment in which she might seek to do this is itself getting worse. No one seems to want to talk about that.

It is unquestionably true that her odds of finding a "Mr. Right" are worse today because of 30 years of feminism. It is also true that the odds are continuing to get worse. We can all be helpful here and help her solve her individual life's quest, but I think what she's saying is that there are millions of women like her, and we can't send them all to the same church group to meet a nice man. There aren't enough church groups for that. The problem is that our society is hosed up.

Her odds are bad and getting worse at least partly because millions of young men are now aware that marriage has become, largely thanks to feminists, an extraordinarily risky thing for a man, where the penalty for making a mistake is literally ruin.

It's becoming more difficult every day to convince young men that all they need to do is "find the right girl." The right girl is only known in hindsight; all the real girls that can be dealt with today look like a 50-50 chance of ending up alone and in the poor house, estranged from one's children and treated like a bottomless ATM machine by lawyers and courts. You know the litany: a man can be thrown out of his house today with no due process, he can find himself accused of the worst sorts of things and be treated as guilty until proven innocent... we have put all these laws in at the behest of feminists and do-gooders, but in doing so we have managed to turn marriage into a thing that no sane man would enter.

It's not like this can't be changed. Finding this young lady a boyfriend is a nice gesture, but it will not solve the underlying problem. We need some serious divorce reform in this country so that the vast majority of the young men she encounters every day are not terrified of marriage. Today those men have every right to be terrified of marriage; theirs is the correct response to actual events and conditions. We need to stop pretending that these do-gooder laws we have now that treat men as The Enemy can't be -- and aren't -- misused every day to totally hose the lives of men who had nothing like that coming to them. We all know such men. So do the young men, and they don't want it happening to them next.

Most people sat by for the last thirty years and watched men being demonized in every possible way, with politicans jumping up and down to "do something" about all the monstrous men. Well, we've done that now; all men are by default assumed to be monsters, and they are treated accordingly. This is what we wanted, and now we have it. And now young men say, "I'm not a monster, and I refuse to be treated like one. I am not going to play this game."

Sending one young woman off to find a boyfriend isn't going to fix that. There's another young woman right behind her, and she can't find a husband either. You don't have enough foolish men available to solve the problem; the real fix is to change the laws so a man doesn't have to be a fool to consider getting married.
