There's been an outpouring of support for North Beach merchant Lori Haigh, whose gallery was vandalized over a controversial war-related painting. But Haigh is uncomfortable with the latest show of solidarity -- a proposal by San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin to display the polemic art at City Hall.
"I think it's just asking for trouble," said Haigh, 39, who has returned the piece to its creator, Berkeley artist Guy Colwell. Titled "Abuse," the 30-by-30-inch acrylic on canvas painting depicts three hooded, naked prisoners connected to electrical wires held by American soldiers, and in the background another soldier escorting a robed woman into the room.

Which controversial picture? The Maplethorpe picture with the bullwhip up his ass?? (sorry, I forgot, that's not controversial in SF).

It's behind the gallery-owner in the photo where she's wearing the black eye. Seems like someone took exception to her putting it up for public display.
Tough luck for her.

For her part, Haigh said she wishes the whole thing would just disappear. She's been in the media limelight before, in 2002 for receiving a $1.2 million settlement from the Catholic Church for being the victim of sexual abuse by a priest.
"People are accusing me of pulling a publicity stunt," she said. "Me knowing how much information is on the Internet about me, the last thing I'm going to do is to do something to have people searching my name."

Her Muslim boyfriend only had to tell her once, I see.

the last thing I'm going to do is to do something to have people searching my name. The presstitutes conveniently neglect to mention her embezzling $107K in Tennessee. And fail to mention that she has a federal tax lien hanging over head (filed January 2003). That alone could close the gallery. Maybe she's hoping they wouldn't dare with all the theatrics going on.
And still no direct quote from the police concerning the alleged perp. No credible description, no sketch.

Hey Mr Peskin! I have a better idea: Abu Ghraib Live performance art!
Get a bunch of lefty artists who aren't busy during the day (naturally) to put hoods on their heads and stand naked on boxes at every Bay Area streetcorner. Then get other lefty artists (I know you have lots) to put on US camo uniforms and pretend to whip and torture them.
It won't do any good for anyone, but it will keep all those lefty artists busy and looking ridiculous for days, until even San Francisco residents tire of flogging each other. Oh, you say they like flogging each other and wearing hoods? Oh, sorry.
