H&K's web site has a link to several videos of this gun in action. In one, the H&K salesman loads a 100-round drum, and empties it in about seven seconds. One handed. I'll dig up the link here in a minute.

From an engineering standpoint, it looks like a well-designed weapon.

Look what the Germans want us to buy (millions of them) . .

XM-8 Variations

The XM8 is designed as a modular weapon; different barrels and other modules can be swapped quickly depending on operational requirements. The XM8 will also be lighter and more reliable than the existing M4 carbine and M16 rifles. If this rifle is approved, the Army could field 900,000.

XM-8 Baseline Carbine

• 12.5" barrel
• Common modular assemblies

XM8 Carbine with Add-On XM320 Grenade Launcher

• Side loading 40mm grenade launcher

Compact Carbine

• Short 9" barrel
• Butt cap receiver cover
• Personal defense applications

Sharpshooter Variant

• 20" barrel
• Advanced optical sight (all variants)

Automatic Rifle

• Heavy 20" barrel for sustained fire
• Integral folding bipod
• 100-round drum magazine

The M14 did all that very well for me except for changing colors. I would rather fight with that than the M16.

They're awaiting the results of the "drop" test.

When I first saw the pic, I thought it was a Drozd -the rapid fire BB gun made in the Baikal factory in mother Russia. Amazing.

This article is dated. These weapons have already gone through testing with the Army at Fort Campbell. They're slated to start phasing in FY05 pending final approval sometime this year (if it hasn't happend already). Oh, and don't worry about buying them form Germany. A plant is opening to produce this weapon in Columbus, Georgia (near Ft. Benning).
