Book reveals scandal-ridden U.N.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The authors of a controversial new book filled with stories of wild parties, drinking binges and sex scandals say it's a veritable account of life working for the United Nations.

Despite efforts by the U.N. to block it, three field workers are publishing "Emergency Sex & Other Desperate Measures: A True Story From Hell on Earth."

The book talks of sex fueled by fear -- or boredom -- and that is what the authors call emergency sex.

"Frankly we found it a sensational & selective account of peacekeeping," U.N. Secretary General spokesman Fred Eckhard says.

U.N. officials say its just "a few bad apples." But a former insider says these are "open secrets."

Others disagree.

"People do have a good time," spokeswoman Susan Manuel says.

"Your libido may be aroused. ... I never personally went to an orgy or even heard about an orgy, but it just wouldn't sell books and that's fine, we all know that compassion doesn't sell books."

The stories are first hand accounts by three U.N. staffers who worked in hotspots like Cambodia, Somalia and Rwanda for nearly a decade.

Among the strongest allegations in the book is the one that says some U.N. officials demanded local workers hand over 15 percent of their salaries.

Another is that Bulgaria freed prison inmates to serve as peacekeepers in Cambodia.

One of the authors describes the Bulgarians as "a battalion of criminal lunatics ... They're drunk as sailors, rape vulnerable Cambodian women and crash their U.N. Land Cruisers with remarkable frequency."

The UN is a Continuing Criminal Enterprise. The building should be raided, the assets seized, the diplomats deported and the lesser employees sentenced to week-ends community service.

Then the building should be put to good use.

I was wondering why CNN was giving this story any coverage, while the oil-for-food coverups go unreported.

< tin foil hat=on>

I'm seeing a pattern here.

Clinton sells military secrets to the Chinese in exchange for campaign funds. However, he is remembered for his sex scandals and the lesser charge of perjury.

The United Nations takes bribes from Saddam Hussein to look the other way while Hussein diverts food-for-oil money to build luxurious palaces, fund terrorists and build weapons. But they will be remembered for their sex scandals.

I smell a diversion here

Two of the three authors still work at the UN. Senior officials have reviewed the manuscript, but did not give permission to publish as the rules require.

The authors went ahead and now face disciplinary action, but although they can't be fired, it is likely to be harder for them to get a promotion.

So working at the UN is a lifetime appointment?

How do you get a job there? Don't bother, I don't want to know.

No tin foil hat required. I think you're right. On the one hand, the UN is a corrupt organization, which helps terrorists, and has never succeeded at anything. On the other hand, all criticisms of the UN will basically be "about sex".

Indeed, we have been here before.

Britt Hume's Special News hour had a quick report on apparently a new scandal in a department that would be the inspectors of any corruption in the oil for food program.

The head of the agency on a telephone interview with the Fox News reporter denied the report. Nothing up on their Website yet.

They now have something up:

Watching the U.N.'s Watchdog

Watching the U.N.'s Watchdog

Tuesday, June 15, 2004

By Jonathan Hunt

UNITED NATIONS — The United Nation's anti-corruption department has been rocked by accusations that the office itself is corrupt.

The head of the U.N. Office of Internal Oversight Services, Undersecretary-General Dileep Nair (search), has been accused of promoting and recruiting people in ways that are not consistent with U.N. rules and regulations. Also, a senior investigator has been suspended and there have been accusations of financial and sexual misconduct.

The scrutiny of Nair and his division comes at a delicate time, as the United Nations is under intense scrutiny for alleged abuse of the Iraqi oil-for-food program. In fact, the Office of Internal Oversight Services (search) is the U.N. agency charged with looking into any abuses within the United Nations and that includes oil-for-food. ...................snip........................

I cannot understand the mentality of those who support a world government system like the United Nations.

They willingly concede that their own small town city counsel is corrupt, their far removed state governor is corrupt, their even further removed state reps and senators are corrupt, and their way far removed Prez is corrupt....

...but in the next breath say that world government which by definition is even further removed and completely untouchable and unremovable is somehow THE SOLUTION.

What's up with that?
