LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Three moviegoers were caught recording the recently released disaster flick "The Day After Tomorrow" with handheld video cameras in U.S. and Canadian theaters, the Motion Picture Association of America said on Thursday.
Two of the purported camcorder pirates were arrested in theaters in Los Angeles and Canada over the weekend trying to record the 20th Century Fox movie on digital video recorders for resale, and a third fled a Los Angeles theater when he was approached by theater personnel, the MPAA said.
The practice known as "camcording" -- a misdemeanor crime in California -- allows video pirates to steal relatively high quality copies of films within hours or days of their release.
The copies then show up as pirated optical discs sold at street markets around the world long before the films are released on DVD.
More than 52 million illegal discs were seized around the world in 2003, according to the MPAA, the leading U.S. film studio trade group.
MPAA director John Malcolm said the industry has vowed to vigorously prosecute video pirates, and has encouraged theater owners to use metal detectors and night-vision goggles to secure screenings.
A free copy would be too expensive.
LOL! Okay, what if we paid you, say ... $5? Are you interested now?
Glenn Beck discussed making a script for this movie, like the script used by people who see the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
He said it was sooooo dumb, that it begged for simultaneous replies from the viewing audience at specific times.
My teenager saw it with some friends and they said that there were times, that were supposed to be serious, when the audience laughed out loud at the ridiculous scenarios and lines in the movie.
A liberal friend of mine who saw it rolled in the aisle. She said the movie was the most compelling case against Global Warming she had seen. She said that if Al Gore is pushing something it is usually invalid. She voted for Bush in 2000 and will again in 2004.
Do movie theatres still use 'film',
or is the image generated some other way?
Often lost in the shuffle is the little-known fact that this movie is based on a book by none other than Art Bell and Whitley Strieber.
Why anyone would take it seriously is beyond me.
I think G Man was asking how much YOU would have to be paid to see the movie.
Crap. I misread it. I really feel stupid. $10?
Algore is a political genius. He endorsed Howard Dean which pretty much doomed him.
Ann Coulter said, "Al Gore dives into the mosh pit just as the crowd parts."
The only reason I would see this movie is for the scene where the Americans are running south across the Mexico border. Sounds so ludicrous that it might be hilarious to watch.
It is a laugh riot according to everyone who has seen it. I'll wait til it's on DVD then cash in one of my free rental chips at Movie Gallery.
I have seen only one movie in a theater in 15 years. Mel Gibson made it. I hate mainstream Holliweird so I don't go to movies.
This is only a misdemeanor in California????
For crying out loud, stealing a movie and selling it via pirated DVDs costs the studios millions. If that isn't Grand Laceny, I don't know what is.
California is foolish not to try and protect their studios by making this a felony.
A friend of mine (a leftist, who believes all the crap that a good leftist is supposed to believe) said this movie was stupid.
Not being a leftist myself, I don't need to see it to know that it's stupid.
(As Ben Franklin said, only fools learn from experience.)
California is foolish not to try and protect their studios by making this a felony.Your sentence is too long. It should read:
California is foolish.
Why anyone would want to see (let alone buy) one these copies is beyond. Crappy gfrainy images and sound, a wobbling camera, the sound of people rustling candy papers ... oh wait, its the proper cinema experience at home.
Yes, movie theatres use film. Great big reels of it that lie on a platter sort of thing to play.
I worked part time at one in the afternoons while my daughter was in school.
