CARDINAL CONTEMPT
New York Post ^ | 6/04/04 | DUNCAN MAXWELL ANDERSON

June 4, 2004 -- PRESIDENT Bush meets today with Pope John Paul II in Rome. We can only imagine what they'll discuss — though one Vatican official thinks he knows. In a recent interview with an Italian paper, the voluble Cardinal Pio Laghi said he was sure that the pope would tell Bush what Laghi himself had said to the president last year: Stop the action in Iraq. Laghi referred to "the advice I gave him, which he decided not to heed. Now we see how wise it was."

To help keep civilization from losing the War on Terror, I'd like some cardinals to start acting more like Jesus — specifically, when He retreated to the mountains to pray with the Father . . . and didn't talk.

Instead of chatting on the record with his journalist friends, Laghi might spend several weeks quietly contemplating photos of the white-shrouded bodies being tallied at the archipelago of hidden gravesites where Saddam Hussein buried his political enemies and their families — whom he had murdered.

So far, the remains of about 400,000 people have been found. Just think: There could have been even more murders, if only the president had taken Cardinal Laghi's advice.

Earlier, Cardinal Renato Martino castigated America for showing pictures of the captured Saddam: "I personally felt sorry to see this broken man treated like a cow as they checked his teeth." He referred to Saddam's overthrow as a "defeat for humanity," because the United States had used force without the permission of the United Nations and its Security Council.

Someone really ought to remind Laghi of the Cardinal Sin of Pride.

It's time for the "CHURCH" to mind it's own business. When they finish cleaning their closets they can work on President Bush and OUR COUNTRY. Until then, they should SHUT THE HELL UP!

retreated to the mountains to pray with the Father . . . and didn't talk.

Great advice to a bunch of bigmouth Vatican office-workers with too much time on their hands. In any case, most folks at the Vatican are Europeans and have long been well-known for their anti-Americanism.

Pio Laghi, btw, is a notorious left-winger who was once the papal nuncio here (in the 80s). As such, he was responsible for the worst bishops ever appointed in the history of the American church. Almost all of those involved with the recent scandals were appointed by Pio Laghi. He is also believed to have protected some of the scandalous "gay seminaries" from reform.

So consider the source.

I don't claim to know anything about the Catholic religion, as you can probably tell, but why haven't they condemned the Catholic Presidential candidate for his support of abortion (killing of INNOCENT CHILDREN) instead of wasting their "moral authority" on TERRORISTS & MURDERERS?

Actually, a couple of the bishops (the good ones) have - Cardinal George, Bp. Sheridan, etc. That is, they haven't condemned him by name, but have said that anyone who publicly supports the pro-abortion policies Kerry supports may not go to Communion in a Catholic church - including Kerry himself. This has resulted in various liberal organizations calling for an end to the tax exemption for the Catholic Church (to which one of these bishops said that it would be better to do without the tax exemption, because it would make the Church freer to stand by its principles). So there ARE some decent bishops.

The Vatican has long been the place where incompetents get kicked upstairs to. Once upon a time, nobody cared what they said, because everybody realized how unimportant they were. Now the press goes to its favorite leftwing, anti-American "Vatican representatives" begging for quotes like this. The media feeds their egos and encourages them to make more and stupider statements of their confused personal opinion, which it then quotes as "Vatican statements."

Hey b***head. The church is minding its own business. Their closets are no different than anyone elses. In fact, they are looking to be the last religion that still teaches Christianity. As for the cardinal, well, in any organization large enough you will find clinkers. Would you judge America by Clinton and Gore? We had them for eight years and almost had Gore for four more.
Also, the "CHURCH" is a lot more than just the hierarchy. It is also the members. That means the "CHURCH" is millions of your fellow Americans in OUR COUNTRY that don't take to being told to shut up by anyone.

I was talking about the people who keep trashing this country. I don't need anyone in a white robe (hierarchy) telling me what to believe or how I should treat my religion or my relationship with my God. If you do fine.

The "hierarchy" seems to think it should dictate foreign policy in this country. I don't think it is any of their business. I wasn't talking about you shutting up.

Hey b***head.

And that word would be exactly what? That's a fine Christian example. Calling people names is a little childish.

Someone ought to remind him that the Vatican's track record with Nazis isn't great.

German Catholics prayed every day for the Americans to come and save them from the Nazis.

Too bad the Vatican can't show that they did the same for those being arrested, tortured and/or killed

Exactly! And it seems like the Vatican has spent a good bit of time in the last few years apologizing, agonizing over it, etc., etc. Apparently not enough, though, to keep from repeating the same pattern. If intervention in Iraq is wrong, then why was it wrong to avoid intervening in the 1930s and 1940s? Where is the difference?

I was thinking bone. But butt also is four letters. I don't set myself up as a Christian example. That's the Irish part.
I also don't go around posting what you posted. It wasn't childish, it was bigotry.
So, I call them as I see them. Maybe you just had a bad day.

Someone ought to remind him that the Vatican's track record with Nazis isn't great.

So saving over 850,000 Jews from being murdered isn't great but Schindler's collaboration with the Nazis to save 1200 is. You need to get an education rather than regurgitating the pablum you've willingly swallowed.

Laghi and Martino are liberals who were pulled behind the walls for reasons. They need to be muzzled.

I was hoping this was an article on Mahoney. He's another one who needs to be muzzled. As is McCarrick.

MY archbishop, OTOH, has sense.

You're not setting a very good example. Many people don't understand the situation in the Church - explain it to them, but please don't insult them.

Nevermind that every time the pope said anything publically in WWII, 100's of priests would be arrested and put in the concentration camps (where they couldn't do much good). Nevermind the network that saved 1000's of Jews. No, a couple of lamebrains in the Vatican didn't know what side their bread was buttered on, so we blame the whole institution.

Yeah, that's smart.

Are you saying that you are a bigot?

You aren't the only religion in this country. Why should the President listen to the Pope when it comes to foreign policy? I don't happen to think it is any of the Pope's business what this country does to defend itself. I also don't think it's any of Pat Robertson's business or Jerry Falwell's business. They don't represent me or my views. Those should be left up to the individual person in this country whether they support a war or not. It shouldn't be the "heirarcy" of a religion.
