President Bush will award Pope John Paul the Presidential Medal of Freedom Friday, the highest U.S. civilian award, a U.S. official said Thursday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the pontiff was being honored for "years of fighting for freedom and for his important moral voice."

It's All About Me" has been the hallmark of this celebrity pontificate that turned its back on sex in the church, and instead turned to poetry, musical CD's and book writing, while His Church lays in ruins at Wojtyla's feet!!!

Just coincidence, BE???

After which the Pope will go into an anti-American rant, lambasting Bush for all the evils of the world. You heard it here first.

Your comment is evidence of an ignorance concerning the liberals within the Vatican, and their marriage with the worldwide liberal press.

Presumptuous of you; what you don't seem to see - or maybe I didn't make it clear - is that she is livid about Il Papa putting HIS political views ahead of his faith.

So you're now saying that the pope is a lefty??? Well, then he put a hell of an act when he pretended to fight Communism.(/sarcasm)

Anyway, a pope can't call for wars and the killing of people wholesale (I'm not indicting the war, BTW). He has to be a pacifist, because it's very un-Popelike to cheer war. That doesn't mean he's not condemning Islamic terrorism, but he can't call for a new Crusade. Unfortunately, that's how PC this world has become.

Ah, and had he "stuck to his gig" in the 80's, as you so smugly asked him to do, maybe the red hammer-and-sickle star would still be flying over the Kremlin, and Lech Walesa would be sleeping the eternal nap in an unmarked grave somewhere in Poland.

Finally, tell your wife not to let the door hit her on her way out. We don't need Catholics like her, anyway.

So what! Bush also extended his hand to Ted Kennedy and Ted still rants and raves. It is better to give then to receive. Bush has tough skin and has proven it. As for the comment about getting the Catholic vote by someone in a prior post, this is politics, not romper room! Yup, I'd rather see the medal go to John Kerry (cough, cough).... Now, there's a genius who has done so much for the world, just ask him!

Your comment is evidence of the smugness and ignorance which are typical of all Catholic and Pope bashers here at FR.

Although it's sad to see that all FR threads that mention the Catholic Church or the Pope turn into vulgar bashing orgies because of some FReepers.

The Pope objects to war, in general, and made an effort to be an intermediary between President Bush and Saddam. But at the same time, he stated what constitutes a just war. This received virtually no press. Instead, the liberal media preferred the anti war/anti USA sound bites of the liberal clergy who run around the Vatican.

It makes the liberal media very happy to start a story: "Vatican sources say...."

The libs have been waiting 25 years for this Pope to die, and a new Pope ascend the chair of Peter. A "modern" and "progressive" Pope.

They will really be surprised to discover that the eternal Truth will not change. Women will not be ordained, gay "marriage" will not be sanctioned, and the use of artificial forms of birth control will still be a mortal sin.

You heard it here first.

Not only is it election year, but Italy wants to remove their troops from Iraq. Now, Bush wants to present the Pope John Paul with the Medal of Freedom. Coincidence !

It was Archbishop Renato Raffaele Martino, the head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, speaking on behalf of the Vatican AND the Pope.

Martino was NOT speaking for the Pope. Martino is a lib diplomat, and a UN man.

Ya gotta know your libs.

However, it wasn't received from President Bush, AND it wasn't given to him under curious circumstances five months before an upcoming election.

Do you doubt that Catholics can think?

"Do you doubt that Catholics can think?"

Are you asking if I regard Bush's schmooze of the Pope -- for no apparent reason -- as influencing some Catholics' vote?

Yes.

...that includes the Pope who obviously had to be complicit in this perversion.

Do you mean like how GWB authorized the activity at Al Garheib? (/sarcasm)

Put the blame where it belongs, namely, upon America's liberal Cardinals and Bishops.

And John Paul stood up to the Pius X Society, while trying to avoid schism, but nobody remembers that.

And John Paul recently spoke on the moral evil of withdrawing feeding tubes from individuals in a PVS condition, despite the fact that the Florida Bishops won't lift a finger for Terri Schiavo (who is not in a permanent vegetative state, although her husband in name only insists she is), but who wants to talk about that?

Making accusations is very easy. So who would want to do the work of seeking out reliable sources, and finding the truth?

The press is abuzz that Bush will get the criticism directly, and publicly, in return for his Freedom Medal. I hope that's just wishful thinking.

The Pope will look into Dubya's eyes and he will know that the president is doing what is right and just. I seriously doubt if he will criticize him at all, let alone in public.

Well add this to you papal pictures:

Pope Urban II

Pope Urban II

Urban recounted the sad plight of the Mid East, now controlled by Moslems. Its churches had been converted to mosques and stables. The streets where Jesus walked were trampled by heathen feet. Christians were persecuted and tortured. Their women were raped. The power of formerly Christian kingdoms had been broken; they could not longer defend the holy places or Christians. Pilgrimages had become virtually impossible.

I am neither smug, nor am I ignorant.

In the days prior to the war, I heard and read a lot of anti war statements, which were attributed to the Pope. I wanted to know the facts, so I did research.

I am a Catholic. I neither bash the Church, nor do I bash the Pope. However, I do severely criticise liberal clergy, such as Cardinal Law, formerly of Boston. They destroy the Church from within.

I disagree. I think that Catholics who think, are able to come to their own conclusions, independently of this award. Pro life issues are of the utmost concern.

As for Catholics who don't think, I suspect they won't care one way or the other.
