Technically, Harry's a wizard, being male.

If you need to warn people about children's lit, why don't you take on Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy? That's popular, too, and he comes right out and attacks Christianity.

At our previous church, my mother was verbally attacked on several occasions by a woman she'd considered a friend, because she allowed her children to read Harry Potter. The 'friend' had never read Potter, but she was sure it would result in some of us becoming devil worshippers. It's five years later, and none of us are sacrificing cats yet.

However, Potter may be a gateway drug... I started with Potter and have worked my way into anime, which is also evil, no doubt. And I'd be playing D&D if I had friends who were into it.

I think Crookshanks would put a hurtin' on you if you tried. :)

True. Or warlock, right?

I do. Not as many people are familiar with his books though. But this is typical of the entire young adult fantasy genre. If anyone doubts it, take a walk through the fantasy/sci-fi section at Barnes and Noble and read the back covers of the books. It's nothing but witchcraft. Harry Potter is just the tip of the iceberg.

Am I arguing that HP will turn every child into a devil worshipper? No. Will every high school drunk become an alcoholic? No. But should we encourage teenage drinking?

However, Potter may be a gateway drug...

It has for many children. Look through the reviews on Amazon.com. I did when the first book came out and there were plenty of kids saying, "Harry Potter is da bomb! I want to become a witch!" Go and see for yourself.

I used to ... well, "Chivalry and Sorcery" and "T.H.E. Fighter/T.H.E. Mage" as opposed to "D&D" ... but most of my role-playing friends moved out of the area years ago and it's not too much fun playing a tabletop RPG without a reasonably sized group ...

That's mainly what I use my computer for now. RPGs of all kinds .. fantasy, sci-fi, post-apocalypse adventures .. were made to be played by yourself on the computer. It's great ...

... although, now, since I order the same number of pizzas that I did when there were 12 to 18 of us playing, I have a tendency to eat too much pizza ...
