NC: Republican says party leader taking sides

Republican says party leader taking sides

By LYNN BONNER AND ROB CHRISTENSEN, Staff Writers>

Charles Taylor, a Sanford Republican, had such an unpleasant experience at the state party convention last month that he resigned from its executive committee.

Taylor says GOP political director Bill Peaslee needlessly barred him from the committee's meeting. Now he wants Peaslee to resign from his job.

Taylor found that Peaslee registered two Internet sites, www.billcobey.com and www.billcobey.org, on July 16 -- five days before Cobey, who was state GOP chairman, announced he was running for governor. They are addresses for Cobey's campaign Web site.

The party is not supposed to help one primary candidate over others. But the Web registration shows Peaslee abandoned impartiality to help Cobey, Taylor said.

"I think that's a direct conflict of interest," said Taylor, who is backing former state Sen. Patrick Ballantine in the gubernatorial primary. "I don't think it's fair."

Peaslee said he registered those domain names on his own time and from his own computer, so he did not violate the impartiality dictate. A domain-names registry says the Cobey names were registered on a Wednesday at about 4:30 p.m.

Peaslee said he doesn't remember when he registered the names, but said he didn't know at the time that Cobey was going to run for governor.

The day after Peaslee registered the names, The News & Observer reported that Cobey was considering running. Peaslee hasn't registered domain names for any of the other five candidates in the primary, but won't say what other work he has done.

"I'm not going to state publicly what I've done and haven't done and who I've done it to," he said. "I have not used my office and position in an inappropriate way, nor have I used any party resources."

Both Taylor and Peaslee will effectively divide camps and end up affording Easily another term.

I think the camps are pretty well divided already, and I doubt the gubernatorial race will hang on Taylor and Peaslee.

I have no opinion on Peaslee, and I've heard enough bad things about him to be cautious, but what we're looking at here is clearly a hatchet job against Peaslee (and probably Cobey and Blount). What is Taylor's agenda? Why go to the press about something from a year ago? Is it part of the Morganite PR offensive against the Republican Party? Or does it have more to do with the Ballantine-Cobey race?

What is Taylor's agenda?

It might be a warning shot over Ferrell's bow letting him know he needs to remain neutral and keep a leash on Peaslee. If that is the case, then I would venture a guess that the former is unnecessary and Ferrell already knew the latter. His (Ferrell's) problem will be how to stomp on Peaslee without having to worry about getting knifed in a dark alley somewhere.

That would make sense, less outlandish than some other possibilities.

I've never really understood how these type of insider/back room things work and I'm not sure I ever want to learn.

BWAHAHAHAHA!

He helped him register his sites? Who cares?

Mr. Taylor was the only one barred from entering. Next time he better make sure he remembers a picture ID.

The NCGOP does have its act together. The RINO's are just very vocal, and you're falling for their whining!

Seems that way to me as well, I'm afraid.

Were you guys even there?????

When did FReepers start believing the mainstream media? Do you not realize they are just trying to use the old "divide and conquer" technique?

8 out of 6000 Republican delegates are whining and y'all think we don't have our act together!

Well, Rebelbase, I hope you can let me know YOUR plan to make sure all 6000 are ecstatic. Should we just let the gays or the RINO's takeover?

Rifts like these...

This was not a rift. It was a tiny, little, squeaky, rotten splinter that was flicked off a solid piece of oak...

Give me a viable Republican Governor and I'll agree the NC Republicans have their act together.

"Give me a viable Republican Governor and I'll agree the NC Republicans have their act together."

I'd settle for a viable Republican CANDIDATE.

Viable also includes name recognition.

Viable also includes name recognition.

Now there's the catch 22. Fern, consistent in her conservative and moral principles, refuses to take PAC money. As a result, she is dependent upon private donations. Would you like to help raise money for her to run her radio spots, by any chance?

...Republicans have their act together.

I have been rethinking the entire premise that Republicans should have their act together.

It is an oxymoron!

Are we democrats? Are we driven by peer pressure?

On the contrary; Republicans are faithful servants of the US constitution--a document that protects individual freedoms, while encouraging individuality and innovation.

How would it logically be possible for Republicans to encourage freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and the duty to vote, on one hand and to act like a bunch of sheep--speaking with one voice--on the other?

The NCGOP does have its act together.

Sorry, I was too busy writing my check to Raleigh to pay my 8.25% state income tax...

NC is a lost cause. Pack up the tent. Raise the white flag. That's my plan. I'm out of here at my earliest opportunity. Raleigh is overrun with good ol' boys (regardless of party), and the citizens here are asleep at the wheel.

Your retreat is completely understandable. The "free state project" in NH is starting to look good. :-)

The NCGOP does have its act together.

The rank and file, maybe. The leadership, no. The NCGOP leadership hasn't had its act together for a very long time. Beginning around 1992, the power struggle between the moderate-to-liberal country-clubbers and the conservatives began. It has been mostly behind the scenes, but the result has been party leadership that can't find its political compass because of the constant turf wars. What Joe Sixpack ends up seeing is petty squabbling over things that don't really matter to anyone and a continuing string of Democrat control.
