Metors have been known to explode in the atmosphere when they become to unstable causing teh sky to light up as such. Unfortuantely, this can have horrific effects: Tunguska Blast, and possibly the Great Chicago Fire (type chicago fire and meteor into google).

Blaming that on an old Irish Lady's cow is a lot more far-fetched.
