SEATTLE -- Bright flashes and sharp booms were reported in the skies over the Puget Sound area early Thursday, and aviation officials said a meteor may have been the source.
An early report that a meteor might have hit near Chehalis, about 90 miles south of the city, turned out to be false, a University of Washington scientist who specializes in meteorites said.
Toby Smith, a lecturer in astronomy, told The Associated Press scientists were looking into the cause of the skybursts reported over a wide area about 2:40 a.m.
Witnesses along a 60-mile swath of the sound from near Tacoma to Whidbey Island and as far as 100 miles to the east near Ellensburg said the sky lit up brightly, and many also reported booming sounds as if from one or more explosions.

I know how you feel- I was awake for one of only 2 (that I know of) earthquakes in Western NY.
I was stll ib bed, and I yelled at whoever was shakig my bed to cut it out because I was up... when I opened my eyes, no one was there and then suddenly the local news started buzzing about a local earthquake.
Neat experience to live through
Did you see this earthquake map a week ago?
All the major faults were highlighted by small earthquakes.
Did they look like this?
... Molly Ivins was visiting that week.
Hey Galaxie, now THAT'S a great diorama! Even though it was off the mark following the book, it's a great "cult" movie.

The thing that surprised me about "The War of the Worlds" [the movie] was its religiosity. Nevertheless, the goofy, pacifist parson ("We must try to understand them; they are children of God like us.") was among the first to be zapped.
But if governments knew, they would indeed hush it up and say nothing. If there is any truth to Aussie Bloke, we'll know this month. He certainly has a gift for stirring up interest if nothing else.
You guys are pretty close. I was just reading about the Tunguska Event last week (weird!) and in fact it was light for days (and nights), probably attributed to atmospheric dust reflecting the rays of the sun. Not forest fires.
From the looks of the pictures they took years later, the trees were "blown" down much like the house in that famous video of a nuclear wind blowing that house apart. The trees in Siberia were all knocked down and lined up perfectly like organized match sticks.
Many people died, but not from fire, there were many Siberian native tribesman types that died from radiation exposure.
We're going to lose a major river?
That is really good!
Yup. Someone did a maping of the downed trees and determined they were in the shape of a butterfly...which some guy had previously theorized they would be for these atmospheric type explosions.

security camera videos coming in...pretty impressive
It is hard for me to fathom that nobody else would have caught something this big.
The odds against it being real are astronomical (no pun intended).
I guess we will find out.
There were some posts when Bradfield was first discovered the earth could travel through the wake of the comet. Actually the day Bradfield was discovered was the day Aussie had predicted a significant sky event would occur. Could be any number of things going or maybe it is only a couple of coincidences.
I live on Camano Island. Heard several small "booms" and one a little louder. Interesting-
My night coverage tech saw it while driving home from the hospital at about 3:00 AM last night.
He said that the night sky lit up as if it were daytime for about one or two seconds.
Only that evil guy from Buck Rogers, I guess...........
A bit of observation of SHADOW angles in these types of pictures, from widely separated cameras, will give a locus of an apparent source.
Likewise, if the SOUND has been recorded with a good date/time stamp, the SOURCE could be determined.
