SAN DIEGO COAST GUARD CUTTER TYBEE CREWS DEPLOYS TO SUPPORT OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM

SAN DIEGO - The crew of San Diego-based Coast Guard Cutter Tybee will fly to the East Coast Sunday to prepare to deploy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Adm. Thomas H. Collins, Commandant of the Coast Guard, approved the deployment of forces following a request from the Department of Defense. Vice Adm. James D. Hull, Commander Atlantic Area, ordered the deployment of two additional patrol boats, two law enforcement detachments and support personnel, to support U.S Central Command operations.

As a multi-mission, maritime force, the Coast Guard has had a presence in Operation Iraqi Freedom since its inception and has provided forces to this area since the Gulf War in 1990. Currently four patrol boats, one port security unit, two law enforcement detachments and one support unit continue to operate in the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility, supporting national defense requirements in this vital theater of operations.

Tybee's current crew of 16 men and women - two officers and 14 enlisted - will train at the Coast Guard Atlantic Area command in Portsmouth, Va., prior to their one-year deployment. The deploying crews will receive training in anti-terrorism/force protection, boarding team procedures, chemical and biological warfare, team damage control and firefighting in preparation for this deployment. These crews will also undergo medical exams, as well as legal and administrative tasks needed to ensure their readiness for any contingency while deployed.

The crew of Cutter Monomoy will take command of the Cutter Tybee at a change of command ceremony in San Diego Friday, June 4, and transit the cutter to the East Coast where it will be temporarily assigned to the Atlantic Area. The Cutter Monomoy, based in Woods Hole, Mass., and the Cutter Maui, based in Puerto Rico, will be shipped to the Middle East as part of the additional units ordered there by Admiral Hull.

This Coast Guard deployment will send approximately 100 additional personnel in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, which will also include two additional eight-person law enforcement detachment teams, one from San Diego and one from Miami.

Three Coast Guard patrol boats will remain in San Diego: the 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Edisto, and the 87-foot cutters Petrel and Haddock. Coast Guard Activities San Diego will maintain normal operations by adjusting the underway hours of the remaining assets and the acquisitions of future assets in San Diego.
