Let's say one of these explodes and impacts the public. I'm betting that two will. Any comments?

If any two explodes (omitting Moore's film, which I think will have zero impact, as did his last), then it is all over for Bush. The media will treat it like Watergate and ride ride ride until Americans just want the pain to stop and vote Kerry in. The Abu Ghrain phony scandal was just a warmup. The Media-DNC-Hollywood axis is in complete synch from this point forward. I believe they even have the future "scandals" scheduled in someone's Outlook, week by week, "60 Minutes", etc.

In a close Presidencial race it is a big deal, politically. More bad news for the talking heads to drone on about. This President needs to get out in front and make some news instead of having to respond to it.

At MSNBC it says "There was no indication that Bush is a target of the grand jury investigation, but the president has decided that in the event he needs an attorney’s advice, “he would retain him,” said Claire Buchan, a spokeswoman for the White House". So if he hasn't technically retained a lawyer, it sure sounds like he has 'reserved' one.

Let's review (cutting and pasting from your very own post):

George W. Bush last Feburary, on Meet The Press

Russert: If the Iraqis choose, however, an Islamic extremist regime, would you accept that, and would that be better for the United States than Saddam Hussein?

President Bush: They're not going to develop that. And the reason I can say that is because I'm very aware of this basic law they're writing. They're not going to develop that because right here in the Oval Office I sat down with Mr. Pachachi and Chalabi and al-Hakim, people from different parts of the country that have made the firm commitment, that they want a constitution eventually written that recognizes minority rights and freedom of religion.

George W. Bush yesterday , Rose Garden press conference:

Q Thank you, Mr. President. Mr. Chalabi is an Iraqi leader that's fallen out of favor within your administration. I'm wondering if you feel that he provided any false information, or are you particularly --

THE PRESIDENT: Chalabi?

Q Yes, with Chalabi.

THE PRESIDENT: My meetings with him were very brief. I mean, I think I met with him at the State of the Union and just kind of working through the rope line, and he might have come with a group of leaders. But I haven't had any extensive conversations with him. ...

Q I guess I'm asking, do you feel like he misled your administration, in terms of what the expectations were going to be going into Iraq?

THE PRESIDENT: I don't remember anybody walking into my office saying, Chalabi says this is the way it's going to be in Iraq.

That absolutely comports, one with the other. He did meet with him personally with a group of other leaders. The subject was assurance of a Constitution. Your quibble is he didn't use the phrase "in the oval office", so you feel free to make misrepresentations.

Sorry, but that seems dishonest to me. And here you were trying to portray President Bush as the dishonest party. tsk tsk

A word about Chalabi--a friend of his was on Britt Hume Special
Report this evening, and he made a lot of sense. This man,Ledeen, is a fellow at the American Enterpirse inst.(think tank). He said Chalabi is being made the fall guy for Tenet's CIA on their failures in intel.
He said Chalabi had always been independent and would not always do things the CIA wanted, telling them he did not work for them. Ledeen further said that the defectors from Iraq came to Chalabi's orgn, and Chalabi correctly took them to the CIA to be vetted. Any info that they gave was vetted by CIA, as were the defectors themselves. Ledeen also said that he thought the defectors stories about WMD were true at the time and we took so long getting over there and making it known we were coming that Saddam disbursed them elsewhere.
Dr. Rice was on earlier and said that at this point, it really doesn't matter about Chalabi's relationship with us, but with the Iraquis. This man agreed. He said a moments reflection about what is being put out by the media--"Chalabi told Iran that US had broken their code--Chalabi ran to tell Iranian intel chief in Baghdad, who then sent a msg. in said broken code to Tehran and it was intercepted"--doesn't hold water. He said for that to be true, the Iranians would have to have an idiot for intel chief in Baghdad and that their intel is know to be very good-they don't put idiots in charge. Ledeen further said the info that Chalabi talked and negotiated with Iranians was also not new--the Iranians are strong in the region and everyone in govt.s and business there holds talks with them(know your enemies and their location(-my comment).

I do not find it hard to believe Tenet is making a scapegoat of Chalabi at the same time making the Admin. look like patsys. One of the things I have never understood is W's holding on to so many Clintonites. All I can think is that there is a lot of underneath the radar stuff going on and it might include Bush 1, who was once head of CIA when Clinton was gov. of AR.

Lawyers frighten people. Only criminals and the guilty retain lawyers right?

You forgot the sarcasm tag. Just like most other occupations, their are good and bad. It is a high profile profession, and it is the ambulance chasers and the extreme ACLU types who have defined it down.

Just as an aside, once again you nailed the SD election, and your erudite comments were greatly appreciated by this humble poster.

Novak, born a Jew, converted to Catholicism..I am sure he is a Republican. He does not support Israel at all which may be why you believe that he is an Arab.

"Not good."

Not necessarily bad. One of the things that has become common since Nixon and escalated during Clinton's time is the need for retaining outside attnys. Clinton and nearly everyone in his admin. retained one at some time or another, and not even all of them were guilty. It is just best to go to Grand Juries prepared with the best lawyer to represent you.

As someone here states, you can't use govt. lawyers about personal things. I wish Novak had that column back and in his scrambled eggs for breakfast.

The whole thing is a small tempest in a teacup--not even important enough for the pot.

Thanks for the kind words. Ambrose knew I was a lawyer. Thus a smile symbol or something, just seemed a bit heavy handed to me. The comments were so ludicrous on their face (which is why I made them to make a point to the madding crowd), that I viewed them as res ipse loquitar. Regards.

Yes. An innocent man doesn't consult lawyers. If he simply tells the truth, nothing bad will happen to him.

Sarcasm noted, however, as a *general* rule, innocent folks never have a need to retain a lawyer. Most I have dealt with that quickly lawyer up, are generally, clearly guilty. However, in this case he would be smart to do this, even if he is completely innocent. I doubt it was his choice anyway and was likely at the direction/suggestion of staff attorneys. Again, this is not your normal joe mixed up in a civil or criminal matter. That being said, if he does retain outside counsel, just the mere appearance of this is not good.

With the election in sight I expect this story won't be going away anytime soon,

Really?! Man, it never ceases to amaze me the people that are on this forum.

I saw the interview as well. I thought the story about the CIA coup group getting iced by Saddams men because the CIA wouldn't believe they'd been infiltrated was fascinating. Mid-1990's time frame....

There has been much speculated about the Clinton hold overs. This is another speculation in a long line. A good one too.

Here's a bio from The Conservative Chronicle that may clear up some questions:
ROBERT NOVAK

Robert D. Novak was born February 26, 1931, in Joliet, Illinois. His first newspaper jobs were as reporter for the Joliet (Ill.) Herald-News and the Champaign-Urbana (Ill.) Courier while attending the University of Illinois (1948-1952).

Following service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Mr. Novak joined the staff of the Associated Press in Omaha, Neb. He was later transferred to the AP office in Lincoln, Neb., and from there to Indianapolis, Indiana, covering politics and the state legislature in both places. In 1957, the AP transferred him to Washington, where he helped cover Congress.

Novak joined the Washington bureau of the Wall Street Journal in 1958 as Senate correspondent and political reporter, becoming chief congressional correspondent for the Journal in 1961.

On May 15, 1963, Robert Novak and Rowland Evans teamed up to write "Inside Report," a political column now published four times a week. One of the longest-running syndicated columns in the nation, it is represented by Creators Syndicate to over 150 newspapers. "Inside Report" is noted for its rapidly-moving dateline and its hard-hitting analysis of national and international developments ‹ with no sacred cows.

One thing I found interesting as will Miss Marple: the Indianapolis connection. Of course, we were just wee ones when he was doing his thing in Indy. Neil Cavuto spent some time at The Indianapolis Star too. It seems there's always some kind of Indiana connection. A six-degrees from Indianapolis thing, perhaps. That includes people like Charles Manson and Timothy McVeigh, unfortunately.

Help me, if you could, is there a reason that the President's contacting an attorney would be made public? Is it expected that he would make this public?
