Ham-handed FBI
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Tuesday, June 1, 2004 | editorial

The most recent examples of FBI gross incompetence -- its "experts" misreading a fingerprint in one case and a palm print in another -- are more reminders that the agency continues to redefine ham-handed.

Brandon Mayfield was jailed for 14 days last month because the FBI was 100 percent certain that his fingerprint was on a bag of detonators at the Madrid train bombing site that killed 191 people in March.

He's got a very "involved" past.

A Justice Department report found that FBI crime lab agents produced inaccurate and scientifically flawed testimony in major cases. It criticized the lab's management and the scientific qualifications of some agents. The report also found that FBI lab managers had repeatedly bungled efforts to root out problems since 1989.

Bad FBI evidence also turned up in the Martha Stewart case.
Guess how often it's bad in low profile cases.

And if you're indicted in a low profile case and can't afford your own criminalists to reexamine the evidence, and that's the vast majority of cases, you are doomed.

Past time 'mistakes' like this were made Felony Stupid.
Agents make an obvious screw up and send someone to jail, they should have to do the same time he was sentanced to when the errors are found.
These clowns don't really try, because they aren't usually acountable.

How dare you post such a slanderous article trashing our courageous federal law enforcement, and by implication, our godly President Bush. And in the middle of our war on terrorism? We don't allow that crap on this website anymore...doncha know. Government is GOOD Willie, and BIG GOVERNMENT is even better. All that conservatism talk is just that...quaint talk. Conservatism is so passe these days Willie...You may not like the neo-con agenda. But then, you may not be as "progressive" as some of our newer members. Republican Government=Good Government.

True, because we know that any criticism of the State automatically makes one a commie. :->

its "experts" misreading a fingerprint

I don't believe this for a moment. Fingerprints are not generally "expert read" in this day and age - the comparison is done by software.

There's something else here than a mistaken fingerprint.

Mayfield is dirty.

But still cleaner than the FBI.
