Man, I have mixed feelings about this article. It's almost a flaunt of the Bushes wealth if you get my drift. For a second, I thought I was reading a parody out of The Onion.
Oh, I'm sorry you feel that. IMHO, it seems a warm and charming reflection on life from his viewpoint at age 80.
I didn't get that at all. He mentions an SUV and a 31 foot boat, but that's hardly flaunting the Bush wealth.
I'm curious, what in the article gave you that impression?
SO Bush has a speedboat and plays tennis with Chevy Chase. So he's not allowed to talk about those things lest people think he's "flaunting" his wealth? I'm tired of these petty jealousies and all this class envy. I am far from a wealthy man but sometimes I am accused of the same thing when I talk about my new computer or my music collection. I guess because I do pretty well for myself, I'm supposed to be embarrased about it. Well I'm not. And while I can't afford a speedboat or tennis lessons with Chrissie Evert, I'm not going to hold it against those who can.
You must be a Dem if you read it with such a jaundiced eye.
I don't for an instant believe that GEorge Herbert Walker Bush, went to all the trouble of writing this fine article to gloat over how much more wealthy he is than most of us. I for one, believe that the Bush clan are entirely open and honest in their relations with everyone else and never in their wildest imagination would dream that anyone would resent their success earned the old fashioned way, nor be jealous of the fact they can journey farther and more comfortable in retirement than we.
The article was about being eighty, and the physical limitations that age inflicts upon us all-and how we deal with it. GHW Bush, should be an inspiration to us all.
I am sometimes overcome with emotion when I sit alone in the President's private office on the second floor of the residence. That marvelous White House staff, the men and women who see Presidents come and go and treat them all with respect, always seem to be welcoming us home.
A person would have to have a bitter, mean, or jealous streak in himself, to interpret this any other way than an honorable man expressing honorable and grateful thoughts.
