The Abu Ghraib Scandal Cover-Up? (barf alert; more of same)
NewsWeek ^ | June 7, 2004 issue | Michael Hirsh and John Barry

Bush insists that 'a few American troops' dishonored the country. But prisoner abuse was more widespread, and some insiders believe that much remains hidden.

Is Rumsfeld's Defense Department obstructing investigations into abuses at Abu Ghraib (pictured earlier this month)?

June 7 issue - The meeting was small and unpublicized. In a room on the third floor of the Old Executive Office Building last week, Condoleezza Rice grittily endured an hour's worth of pleading from leading human-rights activists who want to see a 9/11-style commission created to investigate the abuse of detainees in the war on terror. According to participants, the president's national-security adviser didn't repeat the line that George W. Bush had delivered to the American people in a speech two days before: that the scandal was the work of "a few American troops who dishonored our country." Nor did Rice try to make the case that by razing Iraq's Abu Ghraib Prison—a Bush proposal that took even his Defense secretary by surprise—administration officials would put the scandal behind them. "I recognize we have a very grave problem," Rice said, according to Scott Horton, a New York lawyer at the meeting whose account was corroborated by another participant. "There are major investigations going on right now to fully understand the scope and nature of it."

But numerous critics—not just in the human-rights community, but in Congress and the U.S. military as well—insist that the current probes are still too limited to bring full accountability. Some critics say Donald Rumsfeld's Defense Department is doing its best to stop potentially incriminating information from coming out, that it's deflecting Congress's inquiries and shielding higher-ups from investigation. . . .

OK, folks, they're still on-message on this one. Yet another news cycle. Leftists on a neutral board I visit already throwing this one around.

I still don't think most Americans are losing a lot of sleep over this "scandal". I think many, in fact, are closet approvers of it.

Completely agree:

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY in America or from the United Nations...

I am not condoning what happened to the Iraqi prisoners...however, I think it is vitally important that, in my head, I have these matters in proper perspective...

* Saddam had Iraqi men, women and children put to death in human meat grinders, on a daily basis...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

*Saddam had people thrown off of 3 - 4 story buildings, while their relatives were forced to watch...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Saddam had people's tongues cut out, limbs chopped off and even beheaded, while their families were forced to watch...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Saddam's sons, as well as other administrators and military personnel, raped and sodomized Iraqi girls - some as young as 8 years old - on a daily basis...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Saddam's regime indiscriminately put to death millions of Iraqi citizens, on a daily basis, during the term of his brutal dictatorship, as evidenced by the mass graves recently uncovered, in various parts of Iraq...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Terrorists recently exploded several car bombs in Baghdad, killing 17 innocent Iraqi children and several dozen innocent Iraqi citizens...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Terrorists have been killing American/Coalition soldiers, on a daily basis, since we sent our troops (many of whom gave their lives on Iraqi soil) and used US taxpayer dollars to liberate the Iraqi people...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY...

* Four Americans were killed in Fallujah. Their bodies were burned, mutilated, dragged through the streets and hung on a bridge, while Iraqi people cheered and stoned them...

NO OUTCRY FROM THE IRAQI PEOPLE OR THE ARAB COMMUNITY... AND NOW...
A few Iraqi prisoners have been humiliated (poor babies)...
A pair of women's underwear was put on their heads...
A few naked photographs were taken...
AND THE IRAQI PEOPLE GO BALLISTIC...ALONG WITH THE ENTIRE ARAB COMMUNITY...

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

As said, I don't condone what happened to the prisoners, but, until the Iraqi people and the Arab Community, as a whole, get their act together... WE ARE AT WAR! AND I DON'T WANT MY PRESIDENT TO APOLOGIZE TO THE ARABS FOR ANYTHING!

Concur with both of you.

The comments on the Saudi AlQ terror attacks and murders in Khobor are incisive - "at least they didn't put pantyhose on their heads or stack them in birthday suit pyramids."

Actually the Iraqi people haven't 'gone ballistic' over this. Naturally whenever a Western camera crew is around they will be able to find someone willing to burn an American flag, rant about the GREAT SATAN, etc., but as far as local news outlets in Iraq go, Al Sadr's army of paupers is a much bigger story. Nick Berg would've been killed even if the panties/naked pyramid story didn't break. The insurgents would've attacked Americans, demonstrations would've happened, and so forth.

Maybe the Iraqi press is too busy covering actual news to have time to fabricate some great scandal that was coverred up and would've never even been investigated if not for our friends in the liberal media.
