Was Nick Berg a US spy?
Web India ^ | May 30, 2004 | IST

Nick Berg, the American beheaded by terrorists was allegedly working in Iraq as a spy for American intelligence.

It is suspected by some Washington insiders that Berg's links with espionage may have led to his gruesome execution that was filmed on a videotape by terrorists.

"Washington is rife with rumors that Berg had a connection to U.S. intelligence. Fuelling the suspicion is that he had Arab language capabilities and he's said to be a computer genius," The National Enquirer quoted a source as saying.

"Someone who was prepared to brave the dangers of traveling to Iraq on an apparently legitimate business trip would obviously be of great interest to American intelligence for what he could find out.

There's also a lot of suspicion that maybe Nick unwittingly got sucked into spy games that ultimately cost him his life," added the source.

Berg's family has claimed that the 26-year-old Pennsylvanian had travelled to Iraq to find work for his radio tower business company, Prometheus Methods Tower Service. But it has been revealed that there is no evidence at all that Berg's company actually existed.

According to the report, Berg was arrested by Iraqi police on March 24 and questioned repeatedly by FBI agents before he was released on April 6. The agents wanted to know how his e-mail password had reached a September 11 terror suspect Zacarias Moussaoui.

However, in a bizarre disclosure that may have led to his death, Berg even confessed to one of his friends in Baghdad that there was a belief he was an agent of some sort, adds the report.

Berg apparently tried to make his way out of the country on April 10 but was captured by terrorists connected to Al Qaeda associate Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. (ANI)

No. Not possible. He was a confused amateur, who seems to have been looking for some meaning in life after having been brought up by extreme leftist parents with no sense.

This Aziz was an important member of an iraqi emigre organization in Annandale, Virginia that some on the left claim was cosy with Bush. Aziz's name and one of his aliases is on their website.

What is the name of the organization and the website?

Here is some more information on Aziz

Moore had finished his film long before Berg was killed. Berg wasn't there for Moore.

Do you have any idea if Berg was in the country at the time the film was being shot?

Actually, I lean toward Cicero's verdict, just a kid looking for himself. Reminds me of Johnny Walker Lindh, in a way. They both seem rather naive about the people they were dealing with, and both trying to find themselves on the far side of the moon, so to speak.

Actually, at a certain age I might have been tempted to go and roam about in the way Berg did, similarly trusting in the good nature of strangers for my safety.

This story is little more than ignorant speculation without a shred of evidence. Berg is unlikely to have been a spy for the US because it would have been wretchedly bad tradecraft to use him.

Consider: (1) Berg's father is a flaming left-winger, which would raise questions about Nick Berg's loyalty and security; (2) he allowed an Israeli entry stamp on his passport and carried Jewish devotional objects, thus inviting unnecessary danger; (3) there was no credible intelligence purpose to his activity in Iraq; (4) and he was remarkably ingenuous and showed little sense about his personal safety.

A US intelligence agency would have use for a reliable Arab American who could infiltrate the insurgents, not a bright and foolishly risk-taking Jewish kid from Pennsylvania whose method of operation was to climb radio and microwave towers, evaluate them, and then see if he could get someone to pay him for repairs.

My suspicion: No. But that's not to say he wasn't a spy for ...well, take a guess.

He ad been there when Moore was filming, so that is a possibility.

But he wasn't working to get footage for that film when he died, which is what people want to be true.

The Enquirer has been a conduit for the Clintonistas in the past, as well as a hotbed of Hollywood news.

I think it more likely that they have been "leaked" this information from the Moore camp, in order to cover Moore's rear.

What makes you think he wanted the footage for the film most recently released? It's not as though a filmmaker makes just one film and then stops.

Moore interviewed Berg BEFORE Berg went to Iraq. This is well documented. It is not inconceivable that Moore would have signed him on as a freelance "reporter."

It is beyond belief that Berg was a US Spy. He was Jewish in an Arab land. These people know one another, very well, after centuries of living near one another, the Sunnis know the Shiites from the Kurds etc. Just as most American Indians, raised, living with other Indians know one tribe from another. No, I doubt he was a spy, he was an adventurer.

I think one thing is for sure. Anyone who believes Moore was just a 'hapless kid trying to build his little business trolliping around the iraqi countryside', would be a good candidate to buy some oceanfront property in arizona! ;-)

There is a lot about this that is not known. truth is sometimes stranger than fiction; illusion and reality are not what they seem.

there probably is something more to this Berg thing, aside from his nutsy father, but it will take a good 20 years before we hear about it.

is this the line coming out now to cover Moore?

That is exactly what I thought.

BTW, if he were a spy working FOR us, wouldn't we have made sure he had a better cover than bopping around by his lonesome? How about making sure he was sprung out of custody? Why would we have offered to fly him home to the U.S. if our guys wanted him there? That idea--though I briefly considered it in the first day or so after word of his strange story emerged, simply does not fly.

No, actually Moore was working on his film with days of Cannes. It cannot be ruled out.

Berg was a stupid idealog. His father killed him just like Corrie's killed her.
