Was Nick Berg a US spy?
Web India ^ | May 30, 2004 | IST

Nick Berg, the American beheaded by terrorists was allegedly working in Iraq as a spy for American intelligence.

It is suspected by some Washington insiders that Berg's links with espionage may have led to his gruesome execution that was filmed on a videotape by terrorists.

"Washington is rife with rumors that Berg had a connection to U.S. intelligence. Fuelling the suspicion is that he had Arab language capabilities and he's said to be a computer genius," The National Enquirer quoted a source as saying.

"Someone who was prepared to brave the dangers of traveling to Iraq on an apparently legitimate business trip would obviously be of great interest to American intelligence for what he could find out.

There's also a lot of suspicion that maybe Nick unwittingly got sucked into spy games that ultimately cost him his life," added the source.

Berg's family has claimed that the 26-year-old Pennsylvanian had travelled to Iraq to find work for his radio tower business company, Prometheus Methods Tower Service. But it has been revealed that there is no evidence at all that Berg's company actually existed.

According to the report, Berg was arrested by Iraqi police on March 24 and questioned repeatedly by FBI agents before he was released on April 6. The agents wanted to know how his e-mail password had reached a September 11 terror suspect Zacarias Moussaoui.

However, in a bizarre disclosure that may have led to his death, Berg even confessed to one of his friends in Baghdad that there was a belief he was an agent of some sort, adds the report.

Berg apparently tried to make his way out of the country on April 10 but was captured by terrorists connected to Al Qaeda associate Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. (ANI)

Here is a pic of Maki Kubba, Real Estate agent of St. Petersburg, Florida who has the same phone number as Ahmad M. Kubba who registered "Harvest House" as a fictitious business name in 1996 and 2001 (signed his name as both Kuba and Kubba). That is also the same phone number as Ahmad Kuba on the al-iraq.org website.

(looks like a dead ringer for the pic you posted of Ahmed Kubba from homelessvoice.org)

News reports which included comments of Ahmed Kuba/Kubba of the American Iraqi Council usually credited him as being from Florida, as does their website (Ahmad Kuba)

Sam Kubba also registered as a Real Estate agent in VA, but his license has expired.

Iraqi expatriate watches fall of Baghdad with excitement
an ABC Action News report 4/09/03

CLEARWATER - "It is the happiest moment of my life," Ahmad Maki Kubba exclaimed as he watched coverage of Baghdad falling into allied hands Wednesday.

As Kubba watched history unfold from his real estate office in Clearwater on Wednesday, he was already making plans to go home. Kubba has not been to Baghdad since he escaped prison and a death sentence; his father was not as fortunate.

"They arrested my dad and they tortured him badly. He died as a result of the torture," he explained.

Kubba says he is one of millions tortured for opposing Saddam. Now he is one of millions celebrating the fall of Baghdad.

"These statues are symbolic of Saddam," he said, applauding the collapse of Saddam's statue. "Symbolic of the fear implanted into the heart of the people."

Kubba brought a cake and balloons into work to celebrate. It was not only a day of celebration, but a day to make big plans for the future.

"I'm going to have a museum, like the Holocaust Museum, in Baghdad, and I will put all Saddam claims, what he has done," he continued.

The museum will be a side effort to helping rebuild his native country.

Kubba could not reach his surviving loved ones in Iraq by phone Wednesday, but he watched his cousin, the Iraqi opposition leader, on TV with pride. He said they had one tough job down, but a tougher one still to come.

"There are millions of Iraqi people who are victims of Saddam right now. Give them the opportunity to clean Iraq. Organize them," Kubba urged.

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that certain more militant, anti Western factions within the Russian military-industrial complex are at the head end of arms going via Red Mafiya (e.g. in order to ensure plausible deniability) to the so called "insurgents" in Iraq. In that event, some level of SVR coordination cannot be discounted. Let us not forget the linkages between Saddam's Mukhabarat and both the SVR and FSB. Mukhabarat's most elite ops actually were known to attend training in Moscow. The more this whole odd set of data gets examined, the more it calls into question a wide range of assumptions and the more it calls upon the US to challenge the Kremlin for explanations.

Dear GOP,

Thanks for your encouraging words for my theory.
Do you have a military or intelligence background?
I have never heard the Russian mafia mentioned as political players in Iraq, but Aziz makes me wonder.

It is discouraging that an emigre Iraqi group that wants Saddam out seems to have another agenda.

In looking for Nick's uncle, I have been looking into the name Al-Muzaffar (I pinged you on the other thread).

While I haven't tied Mahmud Al-Muzaffar to Berg in any way, this collection of articles from 1997 was interesting relative to Moscow relationships with Saddam. I'll be gone a few days, so I'm posting it for information in the meantime. The original source is apparently Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

From Globalsecurity.com Here and Here.

They get trashed here by people who remember the way they were in the 80's. But they have lots of well placed sources, and are more thorough in their fact checking than the mainstream media. I have actually dealt with them on on story that never got published, and they wouldn't print it because they wanted more proof. The regular media would have printed it with far less information than what the Enquirer had.

I agree. I've seen the lamestream press print something the Enquirer revealed two weeks after the Enquirer revealed it. Especially high-profile court cases.

I am from a family with a long history of military action and service. Personally I was part of the selective service system from age 18 until I became an old fart, but was never called up and was too involved with other things to join up (a case of messed up priorities which I kick myself for...!). Now that I am an old fart I do want to serve but they won't let me in. Therefore I am looking for and engaging other opportunities to aid the military. As for any intelligence background, it's all been non governmental, but yes, I do conduct specialized investigations, risk assessments and other strategic activites as part of my day job. I also follow the governmental side of intel work as sort of a hobby.

GOP writes, "It is not beyond the realm of possibility that certain more militant, anti Western factions within the Russian military-industrial complex are at the head end of arms going via Red Mafiya (e.g. in order to ensure plausible deniability) to the so called "insurgents" in Iraq."

Russian mafias do not necessarily act as a "cut out" for government people. The mafias act in their financial interests. They make money selling weapons. For example, they supplied the Chechens with weapons. Although many Chechens just want the Russians out, some Chechens have worked with Islamic extremists like Al Qaeda to achieve this. The Russian government probably wouldn't be selling the people who are shooting their troups Russian weapons. That would be powerful Mafias who are making money. They are very pervasive and I don't think the government controls them. Rather, they may manipulate the politicians.
