FEC: Nader Campaign Qualifies for Funds

WASHINGTON -- Ralph Nader's independent bid for the White House has qualified to receive matching government funds, the Federal Election Commission announced Friday.

Campaign officials said Nader has raised more than $850,000 to date from 7,800 separate contributions. To receive matching funds, a candidate must raise at least $5,000 in 20 states in donations of $250 or less.

The average contribution to the Nader campaign is $100, with 89 percent being $100 or less, the campaign said. The FEC matches all contributions of $250 or less up to $18.7 million.

"The Nader Campaign is not dialing for corporate dollars, unlike the corporate political duopoly we are challenging," Nader said in a statement. "We are seeking a broad base of support among the people."

This is great news. Now the greens will demand that Nader stay in the race.

Here is the FEC data on major and third party candidates in the 2000 Presidential election. If you add up the vote total for Browne, Phillips and (to some extent) Buchanan, you'll get an idea of how many votes were pulled away from the Republicans. Similarly, you can do the same thing with the third party candidates on the left, like Nader. Number comparisons for those states believed to be "battleground" this year (factoring in polling data, if you believe in it) may give a rough estimate of how those states' electoral votes will be affected.

Not to be ignored is the fact that Liberatarian Party candidates for the House received a total of ~1.7 million votes in 2000. That sort of thing could impact Bush's second term effectiveness if enough Republicans got hurt in their races for House seats.

I think that Nader can put Wisconsin in play for Bush, he took a lot of votes from Gore in 2000 and Buchanan took a few from Bush. Without Buchanan, and the fact that Nader may take more votes from Kerry than he did from Gore, I think we can win in Wisconsin.

Just wait, after five more months of JF'nK, libs will desert him in droves! The fact that Kerry cannot get any traction against Bush in the horrid month of May (probably the worst month of the Iraq war), means that there is nothing that will move Lurch up from the dead.

That noise you hear is Kerry sobbing. He now has two(2) guys to run against while Bush only has one(1). I'd love to see Bush get 51% of the vote, Nader 25% and Kerry 24%.

What's the electoral college breakdown on that? (The electoral college is all that counts.) Lemme guess: Kerry, 270; Nader, 265; Bush, 3. Nah, that's just what Kerry wants. Swap Bush and Kerry, just like Kerry does in his own speeches, and you'll get something closer to reality!

In my scenario Bush gets all 50 states, Kerry cries and algore completes his mental breakdown and is institutionalized.

I don't think that Bush would get any of these wacky anti-war guys to vote for him regardless.
