Kerry to de-emphasize democracy drive if elected: report
Yahoo! News ^ | 5/30/04 | AFP - Washington

WASHINGTON (AFP) -

US Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) plans to focus on US security while de-emphasizing promotion of democracy in dealings with countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, China and Russia, if he is elected president.

"How fast you can do that and how rapidly others can embrace it and what can be expected over a period of time varies from place to place," Kerry told the Washington Post newspaper in an interview.

"Beware of the presidential candidate who just sort of says with a big paintbrush we're going to make everything all right overnight," the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is quoted as saying.

He said securing all nuclear materials in Russia, integrating China in the world economy, achieving greater controls over Pakistan's nuclear weapons or winning greater cooperation on terrorist financing in Saudi Arabia trumped human rights concerns in those nations, The Post reported.

"Sometimes we are dealt a set of cards that don't allow us do everything we want to do at once," he said.

The Massachusetts senator also rejected setting a date for the withdrawal of US soldiers from Iraq (news - web sites), according to the report.

Kerry said setting such a date "is not a good idea just in a vacuum" because the timetable for reducing US troops must be dictated by success in holding elections and establishing security and stability.

The candidate also accused the administration of President George W. Bush (news - web sites) of having an "Iraq-centric preoccupation" that has left little opportunity to deal with other pressing problems.

"Do you think they know where Latin America is? It is all part of the same problem," he said. "It is the distinction between what is cosmetic and what is real. In the 20 years that I have been here, I have learned to distinguish between the two. This stuff going on is mostly rhetoric."

Kerry also called the Bush administration's efforts to address North Korean nuclear ambitions through six-nation talks a "fig leaf" designed to cover up its failure to have a coherent policy.

"How fast you can do that and how rapidly others can embrace it and what can be expected over a period of time varies from place to place,"

This technocratic statement reflects F'n Kerry's problem.

He just doesn't get what being a leader means. Bold choices, and strategic thinking are beyond him.

This election is clearly Bush's to lose-because Kerry cannot win with this kind of low level bureaucratic thinking.

Who is he talking about? I've heard GW Bush many times say the war on terror would take a long time with many setbacks and victories we, in the public, would not know about. Is he talking about Nader? He needs 6 months to pull out. Or is he talking about himself?

I swear I have not understood one thing Kerry has said in the last 6 months.

From the quote you cited to the idea that Bush is moving toward Kerry's position on Iraq and on and on...

Why they continue to spit out rhetoric that can easily be refuted is beyond me.

It is wonerful that we have a human bean that is willing to take over the problems of deciding when the rest of the world is ready for democracy. I hope somebody does not puncture that body of hot air. The shrinkage would be devastating.

"Beware of the presidential candidate who just sort of says with a big paintbrush we're going to make everything all right overnight,"

As i recall, GWB said the war on terror would take a long time. Probably 10 years. It was the Demoncrats that were asking "when's it gonna end", "what's our exit strategy".

we've been talking about this on some of the other threads - this fits right in. Kerry wants US troops to be used as part of a UN OCCUPATION of iraq - he doesn't want autonomy there. iraq does not want to be occupied, the only thing that has kept the insurgency from becoming a full blow uprising has been the promise of autonomy - phased in, but still something.

follow the Kerry plan, send another 40K troops to iraq, take away any hope of autonomy, turn it into a UN run state - and you'll really see an uprising there.

The guy is a big fat zero. He did nothing in the Senate but make the Washington social scene and hang out with pretty women. Marrying Teresa changed things as far as the women but he still did nothing useful in the US Senate. His record is nearly non existent. That's why he tries to run on his Vietnam record. Kerry is a creature of government. A
