LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Shrek 2" overpowered the new disaster picture "The Day After Tomorrow" to retain the crown at the North American box office during the first three days of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, the cartoon sequel sold about $73.1 million worth of tickets, while "The Day After Tomorrow" opened with $70 million.

It's just a sight gag!
Same as we see the same Wolg, in the same Nighty, in the first movie.
It's like Bugs Bunny dressing in drag to fool Elmer Fudd.
Yes! Like Bugs Bunny or Milton Berle...
I agree. The kids and I have seen it twice and laughed harder the 2nd time around.
Got Dreamworks confused with Pixar.
But I don't think Shrek is WB -- unless they are in for a peiece of the action or something.
Actually, I'm wrong.
It's a Universal.
Pixar is no longer hooked up with Disney...
Now why would there be a transvestite let alone a bartender in a child's cartoon movie
It would not have been obvious to a little kid that the character was a transvestite. That character was supposed to be one of Cinderella's "ugly stepsisters", and let's face it, most trannies are pretty damn ugly interpretations of women. Being as Larry King used his "gravel falling down on a washboard" voice, I found the character hilarious!
As for the "bartender" part, it was some sort of inn or tavern, and was shown to be a scary place, where evil lurked in the shadows. To me, it was reminiscent of the cantina scene in Star Wars, and may have been an homage to that, another movie spoof joke. Besides, except for a couple of flatulence jokes, I didn't see anything justifying a PG rating, but they know that the G rating keeps the teenagers from spending their money on it. It might have been just one more thing to argue in favor of the mildly stricter rating.
Like any good animation, there were things in there that would have sailed a mile over a kid's head, that his parent would have picked up on, and gotten a good chuckle out of. The Muppet Show, and the various Muppet movies were successful for just that reason.
The "tranvestite bartender" was one of the "ugly stepsisters" from Cinderella, and so ugly the adult viewer was supposed to wonder if it was a woman or man.
I thought it was a harmless enough joke. It would fly over a kid's head.
No, I think it is still Dreamworks and not Universal

IIRC, Pixar has to deliver a flick or 2 to disney as the last part of their partnership.
Let's not forget Flip Wilson's "Geraldine", or Corporal Max Klinger!
Next week Harry Potter will be released and Day After Tomorrow will fade into the sunset without fanfare.
OMG!
I hadn't thought of "Geraldine" in ages!
My baby sister, who was like 3 at the time used to put on a pair of my Mom's shoes and parade around pretending to be her! LOL!
Funny stuff!
I hadn't heard all of the details... I was kind of nervous a while back when they wer trying to get Steve Jobs to replace Eisner....
SIGH
I wish we could unfreeze Uncle Walt....
As far as I know the only movie that ever was a "blockbuster" that didn't debut at #1 was "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." By the end of summer the left will release "Day After Never" on video/DVD in hopes that enough people will rent it before the election, watch for Blockbuster and Hollywood video to be hyping it like crazy in about a month.
Maybe it will be successful in rentals but IMHO, Day After Tomorrow looks like a big screen only movie.
Also, if the movie studio is going for the big bucks they would be wiser to wait for DVD release until December for Christmas sales. Is Dreamworks more into the financial success or political success?
On the other hand, has anybody seen the commercial for the just plain stupid looking Dodgeball or White Chicks? Hollywood is really outdoing itself this summer. It's releasing more crap than ever.
Thank goodness for Shrek, Spidey 2 and Harry Potter.
Now if Anchorman would just hurry up and come out.
Actually its 20th Century Fox, but Hollywierd will cut their losses on any movie if they can hurt Bush with it.
Then why is George Soros worth more money now than in 2000? By your logic he would be firmly behind Bush.
Computer geeks like me have Flip Wilson to thank for inspiring a term we use. When you have an application that shows a work in progress in the way it will look on a computer screen, we call it "WYSIWYG", pronounced, "wizzywig".
What You See Is What You Get!
Bwahaha!
