"Dear Patricia and Friends,
I would to, 1st and foremost, like to give my higest thanks and appreciation for all in your "Band of Merry Patriots"! All of us here in ***** Battery **********, truly are uplifted by your generosity and kindness. Our morale has received a booster shot!
...Kirkuk is located in the N.E. Corner, and demographically comprised of Kurds, Arabs, and turks. We are trying to start an Outreach Program in the outlying villages of Kirkuk through the local school system. the need is great as this may be the most neglected area of Iraq during Sadaam's reign due to his contempt for the Kurdish people. the ages for toys and school supplies range from kindergarten thru sixth grade. Clothing is also needed. I will be getting more details over the next week and will be happy to pass the info on as I receive it."
[He goes on to request only one item for himself, so anybody out there have any CD's from the group "The Cardigans?" He especially would like "The First Band on the Moon."
Ends: "thanks again for all your support,"
Please contact me if you can help with the CD's or with some items for children as the thing they most want in their hands is something to give to the kids around them.
Big bump!
BUMP...the Cardigans, uh?
Hi Patty,
I'm having technical difficulties as far as sending you the pix, but I wanted to let you know that you have quite a few happy kids here.
The chocolate was a little soft, but we put it in the fridge and it was fine. Everything arrived in great shape. We have a check-out sheet for the movies (so that everyone can enjoy them) and the popcorn was popping throughout the day yesterday.
You should be getting some thank-you notes in the near future - or how ever long the post office takes. The folks here are truly grateful and amazed at the generosity. One guy wanted to know if you were married (!) and I said you were, so then he wanted to know if you had a daughter. :)
We have the flags flying around our office area and the pocket constitutions are out for everyone. EVERYTHING is so much appreciated. I only wish you could see the smiles.
Truly - I'm amazed at the thoughtfulness. I never thought I'd be on the receiving end of FReepers commitment to soldiers. You guys rock!
God bless those soldiers. Be sure to let us know if there is more we can do.

Also needed to send thank you cards and notes I'd received for them. So I put in some more goodies that Mo1 had sent and that I had around here.

Just keep those cards and letters coming, folks! :-)

May God bless these young men and women!
Yup.
Are you still accepting cards for soldiers?
If yes, please freepmail me the information again. Thanks!
FReepmail me and I will print it out, or mail it to me. I'll FReep you my address.
Do they need school supplies??
Thank you for sharing that!
I wrote to him asking about culture appropriate toys and making suggestions about school supplies we might be able to help with, and told him what toys were available at the 99 cent store here. For all I know there are thousands, maybe tens of thousands of children in schools there. As to culturally appropriate clothing, I haven't got a clue.
I'll give you his email address if you would kindly try contacting him for more information faster than my letter. My email is disabled due to the high volume of spam I was getting--over 100 a day.
P.S. In case you didn't notice, your DVD's went out Weds. to Kirkuk.
Sure I can do that
Mo1 is acting as email/photo intermediary:
Dear M******,
Wow! That is about how to describe all the goodies coming our way to kirkuk!! Patty and all the Merry Patriots seem to have a knack for sending the things we like to get in the mail. I will definitely have to send photo's of our 4th of July celebration your way to share with all that contributed to this effort.
I cannot begin to thank you all for the kindness in your hearts, especially in regards to the Iraqi children. These kids are the real losers of the gulf war, and ironically, can also be the biggest benefactors with the right influence.
Last evening we held another sorting party and many of the bins are getting filled. Soon we will have to put our individual packages together for distribution, and that is when all of the team effort will pay-off. I will be sure to send out pictures through email so all can experience the joy of making positive change in the lives of many.
I want to personally thank Patty for the Cardigans CD. I hope she had a chance to listen to it before sending it on to me. It is different, but fairly tame comparatively to most pop music.
She also sent some really classic books. I look forward to reading Starship Troopers, as the book was originally published in the 1940's. Any chance of finding a old copy of Homer's Illiad or the Oddessy?
Well, I'm sure that these books and movies will be well circulated in no time, and there will be lots of happy soldiers in Kirkuk.
Thanks again from all of us here in "Beast".
Sincerely, C******
