Earthquake Hits N. Iran City of Sari; Deaths Reported
By Heather Langan
May 28 (Bloomberg) -- The northern Iranian city of Sari today was rocked by an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's earthquake center in Golden, Colorado.
Iran's state-run broadcasters said an undetermined number of people were killed in the quake, Agence France-Presse reported.
The quake occurred at about 5:08 p.m. Tehran time, the U.S. agency said. The quake was felt about 45 miles (72 kilometers) south in the capital, Tehran, where buildings shook, Reuters reported.
In December, an earthquake killed 40,000 Iranians in the southeastern city of Bam.

At least two people have been killed after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake rocked northern Iran, Iran's Red Crescent said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about 70 kilometers (45 miles) north of the capital, Tehran.
The aid group told Reuters the two people died in Qazvin province, northwest of Tehran.
Friday's quake was the first major one to hit Iran since last December's 6.6 magnitude event that virtually destroyed the ancient city of Bam, killing more than 25,000 people.
It was centered much deeper than the Bam quake -- 26 km (16 miles) instead of the relatively shallow 10-km (6-mile) Bam quake. Bam is about 990 km (610 miles) southeast of Tehran.
A resident of the coastal resort of Sari, near where state media placed the quake's epicenter, said no buildings had come down.
"We felt it, it was strong but as far as we could tell there was no damage," Babak Mousavinia told Reuters by telephone.
Vice President Mohammad Ali Abtahi said the Islamic Republic was not preparing itself for a big death toll.
The earthquake shook buildings in Tehran and people in the streets screamed, Reuters reported. People in the west of the capital said some windows shattered.
State television reported the quake was felt from the Caspian Sea provinces to the central city of Isfahan and the northwest city of Ardebil.
