Vatican Appoints Cardinal Law Head of Rome Basilica
Thursday, May 27, 2004
VATICAN CITY Pope John Paul II (search) on Thursday gave Cardinal Bernard F. Law (search) an official position in Rome, naming the former Boston archbishop who resigned in the sex abuse scandal as head of a basilica.

His mission is the destruction of the foudation of faith : the belief in God.
I have not understood one thing Truth666 has been trying to say....
Truth..would you please articulate a point of view?
If they allowed priests to marry, two things would happen:
They would get more priests
These priests would flush out paedophiles
I am shocked too -- and probably I need to confess that because what should shock me most of all is my own appalling presumption and uncharity and self-absorption and lack of humility. I need to confess my resistance to the truth that if the world is going to be illuminated at all, it won't be done for me, but through me, and that no light can come into the world from a dark heart.
When was the Church Militant ever not a church of sinners in desperate need of conversion and repentance? Did you ever read any of my responses to Z, or to the other angry, prideful schismatics who lament the world made unsatisfactory by the sins of others? Did you ever read my post of Jerome's Dialogue against the Luciferians?
Z broadcasts a spirit of rebellion and pride, which gravely compromises his ability to be at one with the Church he professes to love as his mother.
As he's about to take up residence at Sta. Maria Maggiore, Cardinal Law looks fixed to inherit the choice rooftop apartment of a better man, a canon of that basilica who's dying of metastatic cancer in a nursing home in Lafayete, where I visited him Monday night to say goodbye. If he survives till June 11, he'll be 55 years a priest. I owe a great deal to him. If you're ever minded to do me a kindness, please pray for him and others who're close to him. And pray for Cardinal Law and Zviadist and me too.
Beats me.
I don't know either.
I think they need a Nigerian or Sudanese Catholic as Pope.
He would understand Islam VERY WELL.
Those are parishes that have been in trouble for years, not just since the scandal.
That's not what was said on the radio. And the media wouldn't distort this now, would it?
Just goes to show your ignorance of the Cardinal. He has been trying to RID the Church of the Lavender Mafia for years. When he found out about the abuse in Boston, he started working on getting rid of the abusers. If you look at the timeline, almost ALL of the abuse took place before he ever arrived in the city in the 80's.
I understand that he's been the one making the decisions about all these new, younger orthodox Bishops who are making news these days about upholding Church teachings. That doesn't sound non-functioning to me!
Well, I guess I'm wrong then. Cardinal Law's record in taking action about child molesting priests is truly outstanding. He wouldn't rest until every one of those abusers was shipped to a new diocese.
There were no criminal charges against Cardinal Law, so there is no reason why he can't move wherever he wants.
I doubt that the Pope has been responsible for appointing somebody like Cardinal Law to ANY position of authority or trust within the Catholic CHurch.
Law is a total disgrace. In addition to being incarcerated, he should be defrocked and expelled from his church.
Thanks to friends of paedophiles like Law, the Catholic church, which should be leading the charge against militant Islam, is engaged in putting out fires where it shouldn't have to be putting out fires. Again, thanks to people like Law who protected and shielded sexual predators so they could prey on new victims.
Point 1: Celibacy has little to do with vocations. If seminaries didn't discourage orthodox young men from attending, there would be plenty of aspirants to the priesthood. Too many seminaries are still in the grip of modernism.
Point 2: Celibacy doesn't have anything to do with child molesters. There are too many examples of MARRIED child molesters to debunk this notion. In fact, in studies that have been done in the last couple of years, it has been found that the instances of abuse in the Catholic church in America were no more prevalent than instances in other denominations, or in public schools. It also found that other organizations were no more forthcoming about this abuse than the Church was. It just so happened that the Church got tons of press, while the other organizations did not.
Give it a rest! He admitted he didn't do all he should. He admitted that the Diocese depended too much on the word of the psychologists and other professionals who reported that these men were OK to go back into ministry. He admitted that the Church was too soft on these men and treated what they did as SINFUL rather than as CRIMINAL. He admitted that as Bishop he looked as these men as a father would look as his sons in need of rebuke and not as the DA looking for arrest and conviction.
What never seems to be mentioned in all the press about 'what did the Cardinal know and when did he know it' is that all through the years, any one could have brought criminal charges against any of these abusers. Why didn't this happen? I'd heard that charges WERE considered against both Shanley and Geoghan at one point, but never followed up because these men were supporters of local Democrat politicans, and got protection from them. Maybe THAT should have been investigated by the Globe, but I don't think it ever was. In fact, the Globe was very supportive of Paul Shanley in his role as one of the movers and shakers of NAMBLA in the Boston area. I guess they didn't want to go after one of their own. Even now, I don't believe they've spent as much ink on HIM, who actually DID bugger young men, as they have on Cardinal Law who made the mistake of trying to help these offending priests get over their problems.
Actually, Pope John Paul DID appoint Bernard Law to be Archbishop of Boston, and conferred on him the position of Cardinal. This happened in the late 80's, and I remember that because I've known Cardinal Law for over 30 years, and was THRILLED when he was given the Red Hat.
Cardinal Law happens to be a very compassionate man who made many mistakes when dealing with a situation that was long in the making before he ever arrived in Boston. In fact, he was personally responsible for ridding the Diocese of Jackson, MS of a couple of abusers when he was Chancellor of that Diocese.
According to the Grand Jury testimony, he didn't know at first about all that had happened before he arrived in Boston because it had been handled by the Bishops of the various Dioceses within the Archdiocese. The Attorney General of the state tried his best to make the Cardinal criminally responsible, but there was no legal standing to do it. HE didn't commit the crimes, he just didn't do all he could to send the men who DID do them to jail, and he admitted that he was wrong in that.
OK, thanks. I wasn't trying to Catholic-bash or anything, I seriously didn't know if Cardinal Law had some sort of potential personal legal trouble (civil or criminal) over the whole kerfuffle.

Not a problem. Just trying to set the record straight.
